Talking Lilly Belle Ride with Matt Ouimet (well, sort of "with")

    Hi Everyone,

I thought you’d enjoy hearing of a birthday surprise I recently had. My wife and I planned to go to Disneyland on my birthday, May 19 (yes, it took me a few weeks to post this, sorry) to attend the Winemaker Dinner at the Vineyard room. We got there early, and so decided to drop into Disneyland and get my birthday sticker at city hall and meander around.

We saw the Lilly Belle come by and decided to see if we could get on somehow. We managed to talk our way in to the office to see the lead who decided to go for it (the sticker helped). As we waited for the Belle to come around again, up walks Matt Ouimet escorting a family and they start hanging around on the other side of the station. I made a guess, and sure enough, when it was time for us to get on they boarded as well, and we went for a ride around the park in the Belle with Matt and his group. They hung to themselves on one end of the car and I didn’t want to intrude, so we stuck to our end and just enjoyed the moment.

My wife Sara and me on the Belle:

    And dinner was wonderful too!

The Lilly Belle is that coach you see above in the pictures.

It is a elegant coach named after Walt's wonderful wife, Lillian Disney.

Cool pictures! You were in the same train car with Matt. He looked relaxed now. I bet it was a wonderful moment!

Cool pics and story... I didn't know you could "talk your way" into a ride on the Lilly Belle. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask! Thanks for the info on Club 33 too, CrazyLegs post reminded me of how much I want to go there!

One of these days, I am going to ride in that fabulous observation car that is the Lilly Belle, and I will get into Club 33.

Thanks so much for sharing pictures! Looks like it turned out to be a wonderfully surprising birthday!

No it doesn't hurt, as I found out. It was kind of funny actually. I asked one of the conductors if we could ride the Lilly Belle for my birthday and his response was "That would be hard, sorry." I said "Oh, thanks anyway" and started walking away--but then I realized he didn't say "No."

So I went back and asked "What does 'hard' mean? Is there some way to try?" and he offered to take me into the office to ask the lead. That took a little while, and the lead seemed to go back and forth in his head for a minute and asked me if it was really my birthday (it was) before he said yes.

As it turns out, you must have a conductor accompany you, so that was part of the problem. The conductor who took us said they had problems with theft (heard the same in Club 33--can you believe some people???) even though everything is nailed or glued down. Apparently people pried glasses etc... right off and took them home as souvenirs so now you can't go unaccompanied even though you are locked in for the full circle tour. So the lead had to make sure he had enough people that he could spare one for a half hour.

Another interesting thing once we were on... on our way around, our conductor asked when I was a cast member. My response was "cast memeber?". He was very surprised--he said that he thought only x-cast members or Club 33 members were allowed on the Lilly. I guess we were just quite lucky. I'm not at all suggesting others will be able to do this--I figure the more who ask the less likely it is to work. But good luck trying!

I've always wanted to go to Club 33 and the Lilly since I heard of each several years ago. A year ago I had done neither, but now I've done both without becoming a member. If it's what you want, I'm quite sure you will find a way to do it too! Good luck.
