Who Is Al Lutz?

I have been frequenting MiceChat and MiceAge since early 2005, and have read all of Al's interesting articles over that time. He obviously has some insider connections to the Walt Disney Company. Did he work for them at one point?

He sounds like he is the founder of MiceAge/MiceChat. And I thought I read that he was previously involved with another forum - let's just call it "MP" here.

So who is Al Lutz?

Re: Who Is Al Lutz?

Al Lutz is:

(1) A nice guy
(2) A hero to many, an irritation to some
(3) A Disney Diogenes, carrying a torch and looking for those who would return Disney theme parks to the way they're supposed to be.

Now Al, about my payment....

Quote:

Al Lutz (pronounced 'loots') is an Internet journalist who covers the behind-the-scenes goings on at the Disneyland Resort and, more broadly, the Walt Disney Company. Although an amateur reporter who relies on well-placed anonymous sources within the Disney corporate structure, Lutz is often quoted in mainstream news reports and his column is known to be read by Disney executives, including former CEO Michael Eisner.

For years, while Disney's Anaheim theme parks were led by then Parks and Resorts chairman Paul Pressler and Disneyland president Cynthia Harriss, Lutz complained about the decline in park quality and perceived customer value. Some credit Lutz's focus on these issues for the ouster of Pressler and Harriss. Their replacement, current Disneyland president Matt Ouimet, has, in many Disney purists' minds, brought forth a Disneyland renaissance. Roy E. Disney, dissident Disney shareholder and son of company co-founder Roy O. Disney, latched onto Lutz's complaints in his bid to oust Eisner in 2003 to 2004. His Save Disney website would often link to Lutz's column. Lutz is well known for his consistently critical look at Team Disney Anaheim and its management of the Disneyland Resort, and has stood by a distinctly negative view of the Eisner-era Disney's California Adventure, particularly the California based theme.

Mr. Lutz had his start on Disneyland USENET newsgroups, and then moved to the WWW, originally editing the DIG (Disneyland Information Guide) and then, with other owners of Disney-related Web sites, co-founded MousePlanet, a Disney news and travel planning site. In 2002 he left MousePlanet to create MiceAge, where he is currently editor-in-chief. Miceage has a sister site, MiceChat (launched in 2005), where all aspects of the Disney company are discussed.

His reportage and editorial comments on rumours, gossip and innuendo are often debated in the online Disney community regarding their truth or veracity. However, the information he conveys is always presented with a caveat as to the changing nature of decision making within the Disney organization. Many within the Disney organization read his columns, along with other fan sites.
