After many months of planning, building, sculpting, painting, wiring, and more painting, my version of Pirates of the Caribbean is finally complete. In commemoration of the redo of the ride and the new movie, I made a version of POTC under my Train table which is based of three scenes from the classic ride.
-The "Ghostly Grotto"
-The "Ship and Fort Bombardment"
- The " Burning Town"
Before we get to the tour of the ride, lets look at the building that the ride is in...
As you can see, there are two openings , the Entrance and Exit (or start or finish labeled on the picture). The ride is enclosed under my train table that mesures 4X7 feet and the ride is 3 1/2 feet high so it’s more like a “crawl Through”. To make things more clear, here is the layout of the scenes which is in a L shaped path...
The ride is not exactly accurate to the real thing but the scenes are pretty close in overall look.
Now it’s time for the ride!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These pictures were taken with a long exposure for maximum effect. Some pictures may appear to be “Foggy” because of a fog machine hidden in the ride.
At the front of the “Show Building” is a sign and a lantern to light it up...
Then you turn right into the entrance, then left into the ride itself...
and you see the erie lights on the ceiling (Which reminds me a lot of POTC)...
The Fog clears and you see an island...
With Skeletons!...
as you move closer you here “DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES!!” and you look into a little cove...
And you see Davy Jones! (through a pepppers ghost effect)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You make a sharp left turn and leave the Grotto and come upon a ship shooting it’s cannons...
and the fort on your right is shooting back at the ship...
The Captain yells his commands... (His right arm moves up and down as the cannons fire)
The shipmates take their aim... (They pop up every now and then through a mechanical system that also moves the Captain’s arm).
The Spanish Soldiers also take their aim and fire...(They also pop up like the Shipmates, This is a crappy picture but my camera wouldn’t focus)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You proceed to the Town that is being burned by the pirates. This scene contains Pillagers, plunderers, riflers, and looters, that I sculpted by hand and painted. They may not look like the pirates in the real ride, but they are pirates in my own style of sculpting.
My favorite Figure...
A nod to the Cantina scene at Disneyland...
And the left side...
The fire effect is done through 12 Volt train light bulbs that have an orange gel in front of them. The light bulbs move back and forth really fast to get the effect. (I tried fans and cloth, like how they do it in the real ride, but I couldn’t get that to work.)
Looking back through the exit opening...
The cat even takes a ride!...
I hope you all enjoyed my ride and the tour. It was a lot of fun to put together and have visitors go through it. Feel free to ask questions or add suggestions. Who knew having Pirates of the Caribbean at home could so much fun!
