Tales from a Library: Disneyland Part I

As some of you may know, or probably not know, I work in a library here in Sydney. You find all sorts of quirky things in books, and when I was returning a California travel guide, a bit of paper fell out of it. The would-be jetteuse had written down a number of places that they were considering going:

    Venice Beach
    Rodeo Drive
    Santa Monica
    Santa Monica Blvd
    Hollywood sign
    Disneyland/Universal (?)

Anything Disneyland related is instantly going to catch my eyes, but what intrigued me the most was the question mark next to Disneyland. Also, Venice Beach was at the TOP of the list.

Now, I don't want to offend anybody from Venice Beach, but having spent an hour or so there last year - and yes, I did buy a bootleg Johnny Cash t-shirt - it certainly wouldn't be on the top of my list. Besides, if you were in California on holiday and had the option between Disneyland and Venice Beach, which would you honestly choose? (I'm preaching to the converted here, I know...).

Maybe they were just Pretty Woman fans judging from the rest of their list.

Anyways, not sure why I actually posted that now. I guess I was bored. Stay tuned for more Tales from a Library...

    Carry on with your business.

Thanks, That's an interseting list. I live in southern CA and believe it or not, I've never been to Venice Beach!

Venice Beach is soooo dirty, and trust me--get away from it before the sun goes down...
Will there be screams when the sun sets,

You can say the same thing for Santa Monica Blvd...
and the Hollywood sign is not a tourist site...it is closed to the public.

Looks like their first priority was to see parts of the REAL LA!

Most travelers to the U.K. don't have Blackpool as a must see spot nor do many Americans visiting NYC think of Coney Island as day trip.

Well...let's take this into perspective. I went to Australia back in 2001. One would imagine the first thing or place to do is visit Sydney and do the tourist parts like see the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, etc. But I decided to see things off the normal path. I went to Adelaide, then Brisbane and went to Fraser Island, then your national capital Canberra, and then finally Sydney.

To me, Sydney felt too typical yet compulsory to any Australian visit. (don't get me wrong, I LOVED it)

But do you see what I mean? Disneyland could feel the same way to someone else? It is the most visited thing in Southern California, possibly all of California.

    Visiting Disneyland could be "typical."

Choosing Venice Beach over Disneyland, well.... it is cheaper and you can actually experience a bit of Southern California culture(for better or worse) there than at Disneyland.

    Just perspective, I guess?

It can be seen very well from The Kodak Theater next to Gramin's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd.

As far as Veince Beach. It's used in so many TV shows and films (along with the Santa Monica pier) that i can easily see why one would be interested in seeing it.

And driving on Santa Monica Blvd, allows the cheap thrill of yelling "WE LOVE IT!" ala Randy Newman (So long as you have a big redhead at you side. cranking the Beach Boys)

This garnered far more attention than a random, 5 O'Clock in the afternoon post normally should.

gumby - I suppose you are right in terms of not wanting to take the 'typical' path. I guess that's why we went on a tour that took us to Venice Beach in the first place. Just with the benefit of hindsight, I would have preferred another day in our favourite Kingdom, or at least a day trip to Tijuana.

Anyways, as I said - I am being very random at the moment. I'm two days out from my HKDL holiday...

Same here. I prefer San Diego beaches and Corona Del Mar.

I visited Santa Monica for a few days on the way back from Oz a few weeks ago and ended up walking down to see Venice Beach...i guess just because 'it was there' kind of thing and have to say i really found it quite boring(...and a little scary...)! I'm not really a beach person anyway but yep....i would probably have to place a trip to Disneyland above seeing that and now that i have seen it...i would probably say even more so than before!

Aww whoever left the list was probably just a terrorist making a list of possible targets. They get that a lot in SoCal.

Hollywood is a pit IMO. Other than the El Capitan and the Chinese Theater.
