Presumably, those will stick around until the plans come through for the Astro-Orbiter remodel and transplant project.
The rocks frame the orbiter in a way that would make it look verrrry out of place were it to be gone.
The Astro Orbitor and the rocks really are out of place, as a package deal or individually. They worked when the rest of the land was brown and bronze, but now with all of the silver, white, and blue paint, the Astro Orbitor and rocks look horribly out of place.

I'm sure they wanted to avoid that deconstruction until
after the 50th celebration, which just recently ended. Perhaps
we will hear a little more about that in the next year or two.
Right now TL is a complete mess with construction for Nemo,
the recent completion of the new store, remodel back of the
Tomorrowland Terrace, New Monorails/Station, the recent
reconstruction of Space Mt, and the temporary show makeover
for Space Mt for the 1st four months of next year. Then you
still have the remnants from the TL'98 that need to be desperately
painted, removed, replaced with what was there previously,
That TL'98 Hangover is going to take quite awhile to recover from.
Critter Country's a mess ev'r since the Country Bears were kicked out. Ya can't cover pooh with honey and 'spect people ta like it.

:-) I thought the OP meant to say that 'the ugly Tomorrowland' 'rocks'
As did I. I didnt know they were talking about actual rocks
"I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it. "Groucho Marx
Didn't Al say those were gonna get demolished back in '05? What the heck happened to this. They need to put grass or flowers their, make tomorowland more friendly.
The removal of those rocks is still on the long term plan for Tomorrowland. Many projects, including the DCA revival, were put on hold about the time that Management of Disneyland and Imagineering got shuffled around. However, the good news is that the plans are now much more extensive and less superficial than when we first reported on them a year ago. I'm sure that we will all be hearing much more about the plans for the new, new, new old tomorrowland very soon .
I can understand why they moved the Astro-Orbiter up front like that. Put something kinetic (Weenie) to draw focus into the land. TL needed that after PM left. But the rocks are just beyond me. They block off your view of the rest of the land, they choke the entry point and take up space that could be used for widened paths to alleviate some of the traffic that goes through there. Especially after fireworks/parades. I'm glad that it is still on their to do list. Although, something cool and amazingly lit and moving does need to go there. Possibly not as big as Astro-orbiter, but something.
Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter
