I say keep the ride. Why take out a ride that was in the park since 1955? The Autopia is the one and only remaining original Tomorrowland ride?
Update!!!!
Keep the ride, PLUS it to the max. Trading two Autopias for one, I never thought that we had the good end of the bargain so they can do a lot more to make it better. The queue is a bit on the ugly side and the cheap graphics on the billboard light display certainly doesn't help.
I do hope they upgrade the designs on the cars. The autopia of the 80s, you were able to look behind you at your friends driving. The way the new cars are designed, you can't do that because of the hulking rear. I'm all for some more back support but I think they overdid it.
If they go the pixar cars route, there's plenty of miscellaneous cars on the race track they can emulate.
Autopia is an awesome ride. Maybe they could update the looks of the car to make them more futuristic (tomorrowland-ish) and add in speakers to the car or track so that it gives a better feel of driven on the road listening to nature/music. I think they should also change the little short clips in the turning area before you get ur license.

Seriously, though - I see no reason to remove it; it's been around in one format or another since '55. If the Chevron contract expires and results in necessary changes, then I'd say update it - but not with the Cars overlay (although I DO think a Cars overlay would be an excellent fit for Mulholland Madness, over in DCA); rather, I'd like to see them build on the concept of using the electric cars they're using in Hong Kong. Make that the "theme" - "plus" the cars so they look "futuristic", maybe include a few gadgets like onboard audio (or, better yet, have an OnStar-style system where you can "call up" the other drivers on the road!) and make it about the transportation of tomorrow. That way, the Autopia will fit into the Tomorrowland theme better than it ever has before.
Autopia is fine for now. As Dusty mentioned, an update similar to Hong Kong's Autopia would be nice...maybe fix up the theming a bit. TL '98's Autopia was supposed to be a lot bigger, but of course, a lot of it got cut.
Seriously, it's fine in TL as well because kids will never be allowed to drive when they're 7.
Maybe one day it would be cool to drive little flying cars. But that's one day. Right now the resort needs attention in many other areas.
Take me to Neverland...
Update (radically).
Couple of things that would be cool
* Make it electric
* Redesign to be futuristic
* Have acrylic tunnels (like those in the Future)
* Have acrylic tubes that go under water (into the subs lagoon).
* Have underground tunnels with displays that simulate going VERY fast
(basically, go into tunnel, 90 degree turn, future city scape projected on walls,
you speed video up, then slow down or emergency stop, etc, black, 90 degree turn,
come out) This will be the climax. Probably need two or more tunnels to keep the ride
capacity up. Have them be different locales. Maybe a tron tunnel to simulate
teleporting.
* Have it hover (think Star Wars; use the RogerRabbit like ride system)
* Put displays in the cars
those are some really good ideas!![]()

Thanks! And Welcome to MC, Brian!
As much as I don't ride it (line too long for someone with a driver's license), I remember as a kid, thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Think about it. I got to drive a car, really drive, a car at 9 years old. That's cool
Keep it. For the children.![]()

Flying cars. Using optical camouflage to hide an elevated track the autopia can bring us something from the jetsons that hasn't actually happened yet.
