I love the holiday overlay. If I have a choice of visiting Disneyland when there's no holiday overlay, or when it's just the regular HM, I pick the NBC HM. We've made it down there for the overlay all six years now.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary... Impossible is nothing."

Not a big fan of HMH. Saw it for the first time last year. Meh. The overlays look like they were done on the cheap and other than Jack, Zero and Oogie, you don't see any of the other Nightmare characters once you're on the ride (I don't count the loading area--that's just a painted sign).
If HM stayed the same year round, I wouldn't mind at all.
I really like the HMH version more, and the Man Eating Plants (in 3 different areas) and the Man eating wreath CERTAINLY WERE NOT done on the cheap, Nor was the Huge Christmas tree, with spiders that all move up and down. Those, along with the "christmas" music in the last portion of the ride really are my favorite part of HMH. Oh, and add the
HUGE hill in the graveyard with the Jack O'lanterns that light up with the music, the huge "angels" with Jack O'lantern heads also. and have to add that I really like the bone deer too! And don't forget the breaking stained glass windows in the stretching room. The only thing done on the cheap was the background for the loading area . . . and lets face it, that area is WAY too boring during the regular part of the year.
That being said, I really appreciate the updates that were done recently for the rest of the year: the new bride and the wedding portraits in the attic, and floating Madame Leota. If anything I appreciate the regular version more, even though I prefer the HMH.
just to add: I love that the Gingerbread House on the dinning table changes from year to year - and this year they Really outdid themselves with the moving parts of the House being torn apart! Really a TERRIFIC new thing for the mansion this year.
As far as NBC characters, there is also the scarey teddy that appears several times, and you mentioned Zero, but he appears at least 3 times. It's just not necessary for the whole NBC crew to appear in the Mansion, as it's Just Jack that is decorating it for the Holidays. And quite frankly, that's fine with me, as I'm not a big fan of the Nightmare movie.
HM is hands down my favorite ride. I love both versions but the original is just such a classic. Whenever i'm riding HMH I always find myself missing the stretching portraits, the bride and a lot of the other elements that have to be taken out. HMH is great too but it's just not the same. Plus the lines are always so much longer.
