In the early 1900s there was a huge scandal surrounding fortune teller Esmerelda von Crochet.
She was a popular circus sideshow act, predicting things about visitors by using ordinary playing cards. Often she was passed off as a novelty... entertainment but there was neither a shortage of believers who were astounded by her predictions.
In 1908 during a visit to Missouri she was asked to perform for various politicians of the state and city she was visiting.
She generally made predictions that were very broad and vague... that might apply to anybody. Not knowing the mayor was a married man and finding him quite attractive, she went on and on about a beautiful woman he was going to be very involved with and would form a deep relationship with and ultimately marry. She was actually referring to herself.
Knowing that the mayor was a married man it not only angered everybody around, particularly in those days, but his wife found out and left him and he lost he job as well.
Out of embarassment and fear Esmerelda went into hiding and was never seen again by the state of Missouri or the circus.
