Big agreement here! I don't get people and their cells phones at DL. "We are in line for Pirates, where are you?" "Did you get my text message?" We go to DL to enter another world, not to talk on the phone!
I agree with you on the level of petty conversations like that, but I received a call about a death in the family while I was at Disneyland for the 50th Anniversary. That always stays in my mind no matter where I am. I always have my phone on me just in case of emergency calls. I rarely use it at DL besides that.
Oh my gosh, what memories! Standing there, on the platform, as the Skyway car pulls up and the CM holds it steady for you to get in. Sigh. I've not seen that for ages, thank you for the photo. It made my night!!!!
The phones in the park thing though...A lot of times I go with large groups that always split up for some reason, and we have to meet up for lunch or to change parks or to go on a ride together or whatever. To carry the phone and be on for actual useful contact reasons is one thing, to call someone from the line because it's long and you're bored is a quite dfferent reason. I, if upon calling someone hears that theya re at DLR, will often give a quick ride-in-honor-of-me request and then leave them to their day.
But I digress.
Aww, I loved Skyway when I was little. I remember begging my parents to go on it, and they hardly ever went for it. I think it would be nice to have it back, but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon. Recently I went on a Skyway type ride at the San Diego Zoo, and now that I'm older, that ride kind of scared me. I can see when it's windy how it'd feel dangerous (I felt like that one was higher off the ground, but who knows). Geez, what growing up and losing that fearlessness does to you!
By the way, not to keep fueling the neverending cell phone debate, but I can't live without mine (literally, I have no land line; moving out on your own is oh so fun). I believe modern inventions are meant to help us in life. However, I hate hearing people talking on their phones about how "so and so was talking [crap]" or whatever else qualifies as petty convos. I use my phone at dland for meeting up with family/friends (as I live here, they don't so it's a constant "where are you?" or "how long till you get here?", all less than 5 minute convos) or for work purposes (I sometimes work job to job so it's important). BUT, I always turn it to vibrate, no annoying rings for me! I'd turn it off, but someone always gets lost or left behind!
ORDDU: Well, regardless of the fact someone is up there, now, they'd better be gone by the time my sisters and I fly our broomsticks back to Disneyland again. After all, I consider that particular spot to be my own private lair. I'm not usually the type to kiss and tell, but I will admit to having had many a rendezvous up there with more than one handsome Micechatter hunk. I'd like to continue relying on that little nook in the future--since it's the most romantic hide-away I've ever been able to find at Disneyland. Let's hope they're doing something worthwhile, like installing mirrors on the ceiling...
