    Sub Safety

    So lately i'v been thinking...
What are the chances of a window breaking on the new sub ride.
Obviously, people would drown. What is being done so this never happens?

Actually, drowning is not such an obvious conclusion. The subs don't fully submerge, and even if water flooded the lagoon water line is still a good way below the top of the sub. There would be air no matter what.

Interesting question, but I don't recall reading/hearing about a problem like this before with the subs. And, if a window does break I think they would have a plan for this.

In all the years that it ran, it never had a problem like that. I imagine that the thickness of the glass is relative to that of something used in an aquarium, like ones at Aquarium of the Pacific.

Since the sub doesn't submerge, people would just have to stand up from their seats to keep their heads above the water-level. Only small children would be "at risk", but as they would be accompanied by an adult anyway...I don't really see a credible threat to life and limb on the new Sub Ride.

    You'll never know.
Never happened in the past and we now see even greater safety issues being designed for and dealt with, enforced and implemented.
If something of this nature were to occur emergency plans go into action and immediate assessment of the situation follows.

The subs were not manufactured by the Walt Disney Company. They were manufactured by the same company that made subs for the US Navy during WWII. I would say these are probably the safest ride vehicles in the entire park.

Being that the upper half is constantly exposed to air, it is literally impossible for water to flood the cabin above the top portion of the porthole. Nobody would drown.

The Glass is can be 1 1/2 " thick

stand on the seat your head will out of water
I think by remember hight from photos be 4 feet to 5 feet from the seat.

look at new photo of the subs be 2 feet to 3 feet above the top of the porthole. will be the water line and one foot if the sub fill with water.

Ah, I didn't realize the water line was right above the portholes, i thought it went up just below the upraised sail

That is thick glass. I don't think you need to worry about the windows breaking. The windows are only about 4-5 feet below the water level. People go deeper than that in swimming pools with no equipment at all. There is hardly any water pressure at this depth to make a difference on this.

There is absolutely nothing to worry about.

Also, the DL subs aren't exposed to the high pressures that real subs experience. So even in the unlikely event that a window cracked I would think that it would take a little time to fill the sub in which time many if not all people could be evacuated. Actually, I have no idea, I just made that up.

I'm sure by the time there was a real threat people would be off the sub. If one window were to completely break, I bet it'd take 5 min to flood the whole sub...maybe longer.

Not to mention, at that size and with that sort of water-tight seal, it's very, VERY hard to break those windows.

    Re: Sub Saftey

The amount of pressure, even at the low depth of the sub, would fill the sub rather quickly. But as others have said, the entire sub isn't under water. The real challenge would be breaking a window or seal. pveticket, no offence, but you're a little paranoid, the subs ran for over 40 years without incident. The water is even safe to swim in.

I'm not really paranoid, more so curious. I was just wondering if Disney had a plan if such events happened, and what the outcome would be
