How can they?? [Birnbaum's Disneyland Resort Official Guide]

Even though it is just a tourist book nobody bothers to check, Birnbaum's official guide book to the Disneyland Resort is totally wrong. First off the didn't mention anything about Jack Sparrow in POTC and nothing about Pirate Island. Second, they mention Block Party Bash as a Birnbaum's Best. Let's see Disneyland shall we. Parade of Dreams was not given that honor and was given an underwhelming description. Then Remember...Dreams Come True, the fireworks of all fireworks had the worst description ever! Once again, they didn't give it the Birnbaum's Best honor that they give the best shows and attractions. Secondly, they described it as a show honoring Disney Characters which was like 3 minutes of the whole show! There was no mention of the E Tickets in the Sky! That was a very underwhelming guide book if you ask me! First Timers beware the book!!!

Maybe a "Vacation Guidebook to Vacation Guidebooks" should be printed?

Well, in my oppinion, POD is one of the worst parade's I have seen! Maybe it is the music, but I don't know. I would have to agree with not giving it high honors (not saying BPB deserves it either!) I am sad that this parade is 5yrs!

You should never have to buy a book like that to enjoy your vacation. All of the information you need to plan your trip is available for free if you are willing to do a little research.

And as you've demonstrated, they aren't even accurate.

Cool Re: How can they?? [Birnbaum's Disneyland Resort Official Guide]

When Steve Birnbaum was still alive, he was pretty on top of everything.

In the early years, he did his own maps of the (2) Florida parks and DL park, and only had a few Disney character artworks to go with it, it wasn't a Disneyfied document with copies of the real Disney maps.

Over the years, it went from being the first to really document everything to be found at WDW resort and Disneyland to more and more of a rehash of official Disney media announcements.

The longer it was "the official" guide, the more it became outdated and passe. In the early years, it seemed like there was more freedom to criticize and point out interesting tidbits.

Now they don't print anything before it's been officially released, making it pretty out of date. For a little while there used to be a "What's Coming Next" section, that you could skim at the bookstore when the new edition came out. But with Miceage and such, print books can't keep up with the level of information we want and the speed with which we need it.

More worrisome is the map of DCA in the book. It is the opening day map. ToT is not there, Bug's Land is not there etc. etc., For the Disneyland map Space Mountain still has its Tomorrowland '98 color scheme. Disney puts out many cool and well together books, but the Birnbaum's is an outdated disaster aimed to sucker those who don't know any better.

I don't think they even have a dedicated editor any more. Now taking applications at the publishing company?

Birnbaum's isn't our favorite. It is a Disney owned publication, but they don't really take advantage of that in a good way.

    We recommend the Passporter books.

Who needs a Birnbaum guide when MiceChat exists?
    Seriously, who?

    Inconceivable!!

When I see the words "Official Guide" I get the idea that there is a bit of quid pro quo involved. That I'm not going to get two sides so I can decide for myself.

i was just reading the birnbaum's guide and noticed a few typos, such as them mentioning that potc was in adventureland and calling the Disney gallery as the Disney tallery.
