    The Ultimate DLRR Souviner??

On are recent trip to San Diego, I found this item in the window of a model train shop:

The proprietor told me that some years ago, a friend visited the Disneyland roundhouse and saw a pile of wheels in the corner. He was told that the wheels were no longer usable and were to be sold for scrap. He asked if he could have them. After a few phone calls to "higher-ups" he was told he could. (It's unclear whether he got them for free or had to pay the scrap iron price!)

Anyway, the friend gave one of these wheels to the proprietor of this Hillcrest store and it is now on display in the window. It is not for sale. Believe me, I tried!

Is this the ultimate DLRR souvenir?

    Where is this store?

    When are they open?

Do they have a good security system?

That is very neat and unique. You don't run across a find like that very often. Wonder what happened to the others that he originally got.

    Re: The Ultimate DLRR Souviner??

A neat find (Scott, the proprietor of the shop, is a great guy and very knowledgeable), but it's certainly not the ultimate DRR collectible. Remember, there are 64 of those wheels on the Holiday Red alone! In other words, there are quite a few of these out there.

If your looking for "ultimate," I think you're going to have to shoot for something more rare. How about the original tender tank from the C.K. Holliday?

Or the four original Santa Fe & Disneyland coaches (only one shown below)? These cars, of course, come complete with 32 red wheels!

These items, of course, belong to a private collector in Santa Margarita, CA.

Of course, not all "ultimate" DRR collectibles have to be so huge. How aobut this Santa Fe & Disneyland survey marker, once affixed to the tracks?

Now, those whels are HEAVY! I'm not sure you'd actually want one. They're sort of hard to display as well (I suppose you could turn one into an awesome end table!). So, while the wheel is kind of cool, to answer your question, I don't think I'd call it the "ultimate."

The ultimate souviner I have is a vhs tape of my little girls on their first trip to DL. It's priceless. I take it out and watch it all the time.

Is that wheel full size? It looks like a model train sized wheel with the scale of surrounding material.

    It's definitely a real, full-scale DRR wheel. It's not a model. As I recall, they're about 18" in diameter.

You would be amazed what you find in the Disneyland trash. Unique items. Don't ask how I know. People believe the trash means gone...it doesn't.

Must weigh a ton. I think that's a great souvenir.
I'm sure you guys remember a few years back, at Disneyana they sold original RR tie spikes inset in a wooden frame with a picture of one of the DL trains. I bought one of the them, which hangs in my office.

You might not know that the spikes in those boxes--authentic DRR spikes--are about 5/8th scale compared to a real RR spike!

The proprietor of the shop told me the wheel weighs about 250 lbs. and they had a real time getting it into the window!

Thanks, Steve, for your contributions. Yup, I wish I had a place for those original DLRR passenger cars!
