    Question Weird Railroad Question

    Since Splash is under refurb, is there something covering the windows giving peaks into the ride? It would be sort of weird seeing worklights on while everything is being fixed.

    I believe there are rolldown doors like garage doors that can cover the windows.

    The windows are covered, you can't see a thing in that tunnel. When we road the train on February 3rd, as we went through the Mountain, the conductor came on the speakers and sang the following,

    Zip-a-dee-doo-da
    Zip-a-dee-ay
    Splash Mountain
    is closed until May!


    Maybe you had to be there, but it was pretty funny.

    Just an annual refurb, nothing new...Painting and fixing up the trains, fixing broken and loose pieces of track, speakers, all that good stuff...The trains are scheduled to re-open on March 30th.

    Oooh boy...

    Actually, this is far from being a typical "annual refurb."

    In 2004, half of the main line, roughly from Frontierland Station through to Tomorrowland, was replaced. Replacing track down to the ballast is NOT "fixing broken and loose pieces of track." It's quite extensive, so much so that an actual railroad contractor, Sharp & Fellows, was contracted to do the job.

    Now, the rest of the track is being replaced. This includes the track inside the dioramas through Adventureland. As of a few days ago, a six-foot deep trench had been dug the length of Main Street Station, presumably to remediate the contaminated soil that that has been soaking up oil and grease for the past 52 years. Sharp & Fellows is again handling the re-tracking.

    While the trains are down, extensive maintenance is being performed on several of the locomotives. The C.K. Holliday has been torn down to her bare boiler. A new mahogany cab has been built. The engine is set to get a new paint job to look like she did the day she first steamed into Main Street Station. This will involve correcting the somewhat unsightly orange and black paint scheme that earned the engine the nicknames "C.K. Halloween" and "The Pumpkin." The crew is attempting to fix up seemingly-insignificant broken details that most folks don't even see, like the handle on the base of the smokestack that's meant to look like a cinder cleanout plug. All these improvements are being performed so that the engine will look its best when she's put on display for the Fullerton Railroad Days.

    Also at Fullerton, look for the Kalamazoo hand car, which itself has received an amazing new paint job.

    As most of you know, the Fred Gurley is receiving the most extensive overhaul since being rebuilt at Disneyland in 1958/59. An outside contractor, Mission Tool, has completed the first phase of her rebuild, which consisted of tearing the locomotive down to her last bolt and performing minute examinations of every single part. This is certainly not "routine." The team from Mission Tool is tasked with preparing an uber-detailed report that will specify precisely what needs to be done to the engine. After that report is generated, work will begin on the next phase--putting the engine back together again.

    So far, some of the original Baldwin drive wheels from 1894 have been found to be cracked, and new drivers are being (or have been) cast. Presumably, the patterns to make the new drivers are the ones created to cast the Ward Kimball's drivers in 2005, since they are from the same specification.

    And finally, speaking of the Ward Kimball, that engine is receiving a completely new piping and plumbing job inside the cab--a rather extensive project in its own right.

    So, as you can see, this is not your typical annual rehab. There is significant work being performed by both Disney and several outside contractors. It goes far beyond merely "fixing up the trains."

    My understanding is also that the trains are reopening at the beginning of April only to help alleviate Spring Break congestion, and at the conclusion of Spring Break, the refurbishment will continue. I may not be entirely correct about this, since I've been on Main Street somewhat sporadically of late.

    Correctomundo. The Disneyland Railroad will once again close May 7th thru June 11th. That really is an extensive refurb. Good for Disney, I hope those trains go another 50 years.
