Original Ward Kimball Locomotive moved to knott's

Thats right. The Original Ward Kimball Locomotive that was susposed to run on The Disneyland Railroad, but was too big for Disneyland tracks and too small for Walt Disney World's is now been relocated to Knott's Berry Farm

What would be lame is if they just scrapped the thing. They are preserving the Railroad History of our nation. It will be nice to see some more steam over at Knott's!

Re: Original Ward Kimball Locomotive moved to knott's

    Interesting turn of events, huh?

While I am 100% all in favor of protecting and preserving ANY steam locomotive, in this case I just don't see the locomotive fitting in very well at all with the Ghost Town environment.

Walter Knott was a great railroad preservationist--right up there with Walt Disney; maybe even more so. The two locomotives he purchased from the Rio Grande Southern and Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroads are a pair of the finest narrow gauge steam engines produced by Baldwin in the latter part of the 19th century--and they were both built in 1881, meaning they actually fit in precisely, thematically, with Walter Knott's western heritage preservation efforts. They also came from the mining regions of Colorado. Same with the coaches, parlor cars and the iconic Goose.

The 1927 2-4-4 Forney type engine that is now at Knott's is configured unlike any old western steam locomotive. It's just not what one thinks of when one thinks "Old West." So, while I support the preservation of the engine, the transfer of the locomotive shows that the folks at Ceder Point have little if any understanding of (or care for) consistent theming--and make no mistake: Walter Knott was theming his park before Walt Disney ever thought about building a "theme park," and his railroad was running three years before the trains of Disneyland ever turned a wheel.

Anyway, Knott's, through Cedar Point, demonstrates the same mentality of story and theming coming in second to money that has caused much of Disneyland to loose its cohesiveness.

Am I missing something cause according to the link this is not the Ward Kimball that is at DLR right now, it is the old one that has been floating around.

The poor little thing couldn't haul a loaded train up the Tomorrowland grade to Main Street Station. So it was basically traded again to Cedar Point for the "Maud L" which was sent to California and is now operating at Disneyland as the Ward Kimball. So now both "Ward Kimball" engines are in California just a few miles from each other. Interesting, eh? Can't wait to see this one out and about!!

    Yes, you're missing something.

(Shameless plug: See my sig for the full story).

The short story is that Disneyland originally traded four Retlaw 1 coaches for the large engine shown above. This was to be DRR's "Ward Kimball."

The engine was found, too late, to be too large for DL.

DL "gave it" (forced it down their throats?) to the WDW RR. It was cosmetically restored and turned into the "first" Ward Kimball." Almost immediately after the dedication (with Kimball himself in attendance), you could get a good look at the engine--as it sat in WDW RR storage. They didn't want it. They didn't need it. It was too small.

DL still wanted a fifth engine. WDW happily agreed to trade their "Ward Kimball" to Cedar Point for a little engine called "Maud L."

In 2004/2005, the Maud L. was turned into DRR engine No. 5, the Ward Kimball you know today.

Now, Cedar Point doesn't want the large engine, so off to Knott's it went!

(see sig for more info. )
