One interesting thing about Neuschwanstein Castle that doesn't seem to get noticed is how new it is.
It's only 75 years older than Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.
In other words, it's just as much a "Disneyland" castle as the Disneyland castle, as far as being authentically medieval. In another 23 years, the time gap between Sleeping Beauty's castle and the present will be the same as the time gap between Sleeping Beauty's castle and Neuschwanstein Castle when the Disney version was built!
Excellent point. Most true medieval castles were actually rather large, ugly forts that bear little resemblance to our idea of a fairy-tale castle. Those conceptions come from the far more recent Romantic period when the truly dark and barbaric Middle Ages were recast as a time of magic and wonder.
