    CM's switching to generic uniforms?

Ok, I went to DL yesterday and grabbed a box of popcorn. I wanted a little alone time, so I went to the path between Frontierland and Plaza Gardens, about 6 pm.

I was looking out at the hub and was looking out at all the preparations going on for the parade, and I noticed the usual (at least lately) Frontierland and Tomorrowland CM's assisting with the set-up and crowd control. A minute or so into this, I see a POTC CM in costume walking across Main Street with a backpack on his back.

Then it finally dawned on me... In the last few months I have seen a huge increase in CM's trapsing through the park that do not belong in certain lands. Especially along Main Street. Go to Main Street now and you will often see POTC, HM, Frontierland CM's on their way to the employee shuttle and helping out with the parade. I also saw security bag-check workers in their very generic uniforms helping out. On top of this you see CM's in POTC, HM, Frontierland costumes with backpacks, coolers, the normal things all of us take with us to work. I have noticed an increase in this in the last few months. While I have never been a CM I do believe that backstage was used a lot more efficiently than it is now to get employees from point A to point B. But it looks like the suits are now allowing the CM's to use the park itself more frequently to get where they have to go (presumably to the employee shuttle area behind SM).

Then all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks -- I had the realization that Disney is trying to desensitize the guests into the impact that any particular costume has on their experience of the park. By allowing the CM's to trapse through the park it decreases the impact of a particular costume to the theming of the area it is supposed to be in.

Here is my point -- a prediction -- to all of this... In a couple years CM's are going to lose their costumes and switch to generic uniforms throughout the park. A huge cost-cutting measure. By doing things like I just described Disney is attempting to decrease the impact of the CM's costume on the guest. This is just the beginning. Soon, sporadically, it won't surprise me if you start seeing CM's in generic uniforms.

    What do you all think?

well , we can only hope this does not happen , i remember when Great America in Sanjose went to a generic costume for all the employees , all the theming for the whole park went downhill from there , Of course it was also sold and bought about 5 times during that but still

Well, in DCA the use of Khaki pants is ubiquitous. I think in parts its a reaction to deal with the vast range of sizes they now have to deal with in large numbers: make the pool bigger.

I haven't been to the park in a long time. I also now don't go very often, but CM's have always had to cross Main Street to reach their work locations. When I worked there in the mid 90's, it happened all the time. It's not possible to walk from the westside of the park to the (old) CM lockerrooms without crossing Main Street. Well, ok, CM's could walk all the way around ToonTown, but nobody ever did that.

So, I can't say if it's happening more often, or if you are just going more so you notice it more. I dunno. But it has been going on at DL for 50 years.

That's a big reason why Disneyworld was built on top of the tunnels, because, Walt hated to see the CM's walking onstage to get to their work locations.

I know that at the Magic Kingdom at WDW, employees have regularly been used "out of place" to staff parades for quite some time. While this breaks with the theming, I am not aware of it leading to further generalizations of the uniforms.

I agree. They used to be a lot more detailed and themed a few years ago. Now, not so much.

I do admit that I have been going more often lately, so maybe I do notice it much more. I do know that when you worked there you weren't allowed to take your costume home, but my niece, who works in one of the restaurants, takes her costume home all the time and changes there.

And I complained to city hall about this -- I was at the McDonalds across the street on Harbor and I saw two CM's in costume eating there!

But please understand that I am no expert in this situation. I am only speculating. I do see a lot more of this going on though than I had in the past. It's just weird when you go on a ride and are helped by a pirate, or are escorted into the Haunted Mansion by someone dressed in an elegantly creepy suit or dress. And then an hour later you see these same people trapsing through the park as if it is some food court worker or salesperson from the local mall on their way to their car.

Um... Garrett240 is right; there's no real way to get from Harbor Pointe to the westside without crossing Main Street. The only way is to take the backstage shuttle to TDA, which means you could have up to a 15 minute wait for the shuttle, more if a parade is starting or finishing by TDA, then you have a couple-minute ride on the shuttle, then it'll take you about 6 minutes to walk from the shuttle stop back there to Big Thunder Mountain, at which point you have to walk onstage anyway for the rest of your journey to your location. The alternative is a couple minute walk to Inn Between (or Plaza Inn) and a few more minutes to your location (depending where it is) by crossing Main Street and the rest of the park. It's always been done this way and it probably always will.

The only reason you noticed it more recently is because you took the time to stop and look for it.

But that doesn't mean you're wrong about the generic costumes, although you more than likely are...

True, we never saw customes outside of DL. I'm not a fan of "take your custome home" program. So, as far as walking around outside of the park, yeah that's bad. But it's not news about seeing them inside of the park.

Doubt it. Each costume might become cheaper, but I seriously doubt that everyone will wear the exact same thing.

The jump would be like Disney offering a B&M looped (yes, I said LOOP) inverted coaster over Fantasyland named Peter Pan: The XTREME!. In other words, it ain't gonna happen.

You're allowed to have three full costumes checked out at one time.

And I complained to city hall about this -- I was at the McDonalds across the street on Harbor and I saw two CM's in costume eating there!
    That's not a big deal.

I was thinking this maybe too. It's just that HM and POTC costumes must be so expensive compared to a polo shirt and khaki pants. And with turnover being the way it is.

This all just got me to thinking....

Are you suggesting they lose costumes because the turnover rate? You realize you have to return all the costumes you rent out, right?

No, I am not advocating this. I am looking at it from managment standpoint. You mean the CM's have to rent their costumes? As in having to pay for them?
