They're not, but if they care about their businesss, they would. If they continue the way they are, they're just stupid.

I appreciate the hard work that CM's do, and I do feel that they deserve better - but to answer your question I'd say no.

Two things that destroy the credibility of your well-thought out letter:

    1. Your math is significantly off. You need an extra zero and come to 22,880,000, twenty million more labor hours than you suggest.
    2. You brought religion into it, which means you instantly lose respect.

    Other than that, great job!

My answer is no as well and the letter is just ...IDK...I would not take it seriously.

The answer is NO, they are not morally obligated. I work for a HUGE corporation as well, and no company is morally obligated to behave a certain way.

Oh, and I agree with everyone else: there is no moral obligation to do anything with the pay rates.

You're right. I copied it from my calculator and it dropped a zero by accident. That does significantly change the numbers. And it in fact ruins the argument that Disney can afford to raise wages.

Of who? If someone loses respect for me because I mention religion, then I have lost the respect of someone I don't respect in the first place.

Interesting thought. So if slavery was legal, you'd have no problem with a company hiring slaves? (Remember, you just said morality isn't an issue.)

DL CM's can not be compared to slaves. CA has the most lenient labor laws in this country. Most of the country does not even have a minimum wage as high or all the employee protection laws. Nobody is forcing CM's to work there. It's their choice. Once the choice to work there is made and the wages agreed upon I think it's ludicrous to start whining about it. they accepted the job at those terms. When I didn't like a few of my jobs I didn;t bitch and moan and try to change the companies ways. I found a job I was happy at.

Re: Is Disneyland morally obligated to raise Cast Member pay rates?

I'd say "no" because it's not really a moral issue in this case -- nor are they obligated.

Now, before I go on, I am in FULL support of a CM pay raise and/or some drastic change in the way things are done in an effort to retain CMs.

But when I look and see how there are many other options there are in the Anaheim vacinity for people who are looking for a similar wage, I can't really say that it is a 'moral obligation'. Working at Disneyland might be more fun than rounding up carts in the parking lot of the local Target, but the wage difference is probably minimal.

I'm much more sympathetic to those people who are working at a local Wal-Mart where it is the place to work in their small town where the local employment options besides Wal-Mart are minimal. There are areas in this country like that, but Anaheim ain't exactly one of them. And usually in those cases, people feel trapped by their low-paying jobs and can't afford to leave them. In the Disneyland case, people just leave and get another job.

As long as there is enough people to fill the CM vacancies (and there always are), DL just doesn't feel obligated to up the pay.

As much as I would like to agree because I believe the CMs deserve more money, I just can't agree with the 'moral obligation' aspect of it.

I did not SAY I had no problem with it! And I didn't say a word about slavery. Don't put words in my mouth. That's rediculous.

I didn't get a raise for 3 YEARS at my company. A HUGE CORP. BANK! (With lots of feel good commercials!!!) I have worked there 27 years, I am not leaving NOW, so close to retirement. I just had to suck it up.

These companies can do whatever the hell they like, they are calling the shots. Corporations, overall, are heartless. The workers make it happen for the big guys who make millions in annual bonuses. I have a HUGE issue with that and feel THAT is a true moral wrong. Not giving out raises, as long as you are making minimum wage (which I am making about 3-4 times that per hour) is not really a moral issue. They are within the guidelines of the law.
