    Opus Archives: Snow White Grotto

I hate when old threads are locked and you can't go back and add to them. But since the Snow White Grotto Mystery thread has been locked, I just have to start a new thread. So...from the Opus Archives...we now know who sculpted these statues. Or at least we now know who Disneyland thought sculpted them!

From the August 9, 1991 issue of the Disneyland Line Cast Newsletter:

Seems a little odd that there are numorous reports that the Disneyland Tour Guides are stating that the name of the sculptor is a mystery, when Disneyland seemed to know who it was in 1991. Oh well. Great job, Leonida Parma...where ever you are!

BTW...here's the previous thread for reference:

That is cool and very interesting- I never would have guessed that snow white and the dwarves are the same height. Awesome find.

I thought that looked like Carrera Marble! I took these close up photographs last week, and noted the white color with the deep veins of blue and pink. Thanks for the article confirming my hunch!

Interesting...I had heard that Tokyo had replicas, but never knew that DL displayed replicas too. Anyone know where the originals are stored now?

Yep. That first closeup photo of Snow that Froggie has up there seems to confirm Disneyland's are still the replicas. You can see that the marbling is actually painted on.

I have no idea where the originals are now. Could still be at the Staff Shop at Disneyland, or at WDI in Glendale. Would doubt the Disney Archives would want to take charge of something that heavy and bulky.

If they were Walt's personal property, they could have gone back to the Disney family and Retlaw's warehouse. I know that sometime in the mid to late 80's, Lillian Disney took possession of most of the family property in the Park that Walt hadn't given or sold to Disneyland. Overnight almost all of Club 33's Trophy Room artifacts disappeared. I know a lot of furnishings and antiques from the Disney family apartment above the firehouse went back to the family at that time as well.

But honestly...I don't know where the originals are. Guess we just started another mystery!

Heck...I can't even remember where I put my car keys!

Opus know much about many things.

Opus know much less about many other things.

That's what I'm thinking. He's MiceChat's own little Dave Smith.

Little? I'll have you know that I could fit two Dave Smiths in a pair of my pants!

Not while I was wearing them, of course.

Naw. I'm not even close to Dave Smith. If he don't know right off the top of his head...he can usually find out in about 10 seconds.

The only way I could even come close to beating Dave Smith at a game of Disney Trivial Pursuit...would be if I got to pick all the questions.

Slightly random question. I presume they are either at the Studio in some presentation cabinet, or in Diane Miller's possession.

The awards Mr. Disney personally won were housed in Retlaw Enterprises' offices until recently, and one presumes the pieces will eventually find a home at the Walt Disney museum being planned for San Francisco.

The originals are at WDI in Glendale. They were being refurbished by an art restorer who is an expert on working with marble. Last time i was them they were stored in a room with many maquettes and figure heads. I believe you can see the originals in the background on many of the travel channel specials on WDW, Imagineering, or DL when they are interviewing
    Imagineers (Baxter, Sklar, etc.)
