My favorite Diseneyland Myth is that the Matterhorn sinks a half inch every year. I wonder how these things get started.
I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but I would like to indicate that there is a very good reason why the hearse myth has persisted for so long - because Disneyland adopted it as their official story. Perhaps not knowing it to be likely false?
My former roommate went on a family trip to WDW and brought me back as a souvenir a model reproduction of the hearse outside of Florida's Haunted Mansion. On the box itself (which I saved) there is a large-print text description of how the hearse outside the original DL Haunted Mansion is the actual hearse which carried Brigham Young to his grave.
Naturally I took this as a confirmation. Only later when I looked into it did I find that there was no documentation that proved this was Young's hearse - not only that, it was Mormon tradition that the deceased be carried by hand to his grave by pallbearers, not in a hearse. It is likely that Young would have been carried by hand.

Definitely NOT true, as a comparison of the drawings reveals.
Of course, in the interest of not getting too technical in their press blurbs, it was probably just easier for Disney to explain it that way. The C.K. Holliday certainly looks to the Lilly Belle for inspiration, but they vary greatly in their details and proportions.
