Re: Finally got some great night photos of DCA!!

Very nice pictures. I also enjoy watching and taking night shots. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to take any for quite a while. I used to lug around my Nikon F100 and a tripod. I recently upgraded to a dSLR, so maybe I'll bring it down on my next trip.

I have taken some night shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the great thing about the dSLR is the ability to 'chimp' the shot and see if you got it. I remember the anticipation of having to wait for the film to come back to see if you got the shot.

Anyway, curious about your technique and other equipment...

Did you you a full sized tripod and a cable release? Or do you use the timer? What lens were you using, noticed that most shots were ~40mm...

Also curious what exposure mode you use? I typically shoot aperature and monitor the shutter speed. The Nikon will only go up to a 30sec exposure. So I would typically dial in a small aperature until the exposure was near max. The exception was if there was some periodic motion you want to catch that is < 30 sec. The one advantage to the longer times is that you tend to get fewer people in the picture, since most folks won't stand still for 30 seconds.

All of my shots were taken with a Canon Rebel XTi with a full tripod. The lens is an 18-50mm. I was using the timer but i just bought a cable release so that should work better. I used shutter priority so i could manually set the exposure time. It was roughly between 10-20sec. exposures. If you would like all of my setting info you can get that on my Zenfolio page. Just click on the pics and you will see an icon in the upper right of the image, hover your mouse over that and it will display all of the settings for that picture.
