What's killing the trees around the Grand Californian?

It first began to catch my eye last Fall once the Monorail began making the half loop trip back and forth through the Grand Californian Hotel: Most of the trees in the courtyard area plus a few over by the Hotel entrance to DCA/Redwood Creek look like they're dying. Does anyone know what is causing this? Aren't these some type of fir tree? Are they getting nailed by some type of bark beetle similar to the ones up around Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear? Will these all have to be replaced, and if so...will they have to plant seedlings? It looks like it would be tough to plant fully grown trees in the courtyard area.

I believe they are Redwood trees. If so they are very sensitive to the type of climate and soil conditions. Chance are they are dying because they aren't in the area they were originally propegated in, not because of any disease or bugs.

Sometimes trees just die. These trees are grown huge and plucked out of the ground to go to DLR. There are bound to be a few casualties when doing this. There isn't some sort of shadey activity going on.

Maybe it's a mass suicide from standing over a underwhelming Disney park?

Wettham is right...The California Redwood is notorious for "resisting" being transplanted (in other words most of them die after going through the process.) They live in a very particular climate and seldom take to growing anywere else.

Hatter, I don't recall anyone claiming anything "shady" was going on.

I know. I just get the impression with threads like this that people believe what's happening is more than meets the eye. IE: A crazy tree disease is spreading, or Ed Grier is going there at night and poisening them himself.

Maybe they're dying due to the fact they're stuck in DCA and not in Disneyland?

I took that as a pun. Trees...shady...heh heh...

Redwoods, eh? I wonder if these don't last if they'll swith to look alikes, such as some type of cedar. What's strange is that they seemed to be doing fine for the past...what? Five or six years? I don't think this is due to transplant issues, but I could be wrong. Seems like that type of thing would have turned up in the first few months.
