Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Sadly, next to nothing happened with the model today. I had to do some photo work for the fall semester, and then I was transcribing some delightful vintage John Williams music--specifically, "In the Idol's Temple" from Raiders of the Lost Ark. That's genius right there, but that genius unfortunately distracted me from doing any modeling. I did a little in the last few minutes, but mismatches with the blueprints are very, very discouraging.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Today, I'm back to work on the new-and-improved Haunted Mansion facade. Blueprints are consistently refusing to line up properly with each other, which is a major source of frustration, but I've decided to mostly ditch the overhead cross-sections I have, as they seem to be inaccurate. So far, I have the exterior walls, part of the front pediment, part of one column, the bottom-floor porches, a rudimentary set of verandas, and the shed-like structure in the back of the facade. Still lots of work to do. This is gonna take a while...

EDIT: Just so y'all know, I really wouldn't be spending so much time on such a tiresome re-building project, except that the exact dimensions of the facade affect the dimensions of the gardens and queue and graveyards that surround the facade. If I'm to get those done correctly the first time--and I've learned the hard way that pushing forward based on incorrect assumptions is a bad idea!--then I'll need to get the mansion mostly finished first.

The good news is, I just finished the molding along the bottom of the second floor and it's much more "correct" and pretty than the first time I did it a year ago. The bad news is, my new method takes a long time and involves lots of punching in letters and numbers. Oh goodness...the molding along the bottom of the third floor is going to take forever. I think I'll attack that a few hours from now.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Here's a little in-progress render of the new HM facade, under construction in a separate file. You can see how the walls really do have thickness.

Maybe I'll go crazy this time around and actually create true windows. Gasp!

EDIT: By the way, shortly after rendering this, I decided to re-use the columns I originally made a year ago. They were so much better than the ones you see here, and I haven't the faintest idea how I made them. I guess my skills haven't matured as much as I'd hoped. Anyway, the columns now look better than what you see in this render.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

And a reverse angle. Anyone who can provide me with any information regarding the shed-like object in back--its size, position along the back wall, purpose, etc.--will forever have my gratitude. PLEASE!

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

This stuff is incredible, thank you SO much for sharing it with us - I'm loving it from my little piece of Sydney !!

...and your models make good substitutes for the far, far away park.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Thank you! I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying it, especially considering how far from the park you live. For what it's worth, I hope you get a chance to visit very soon!

Little happened with the model yesterday, sadly--I went for a little trip to the coast with some family and my girlfriend, which was fun despite the realization that I'd forgotten my second memory card for my camera. After I came back, socialization was followed by an exciting session of copying a handwritten John Williams conductor score into Finale on the computer. This lasted till the wee hours of the morn, at which point I caved and hit the hay. I did, however, have a little time to make adjustments to the new mansion facade and start work on the molding between the second and third floors before we left yesterday.

Today will be a big cleaning day for me, but being the obsessive guy that I am, I'm sure I'll be taking frequent breaks to work both on the model and the music engraving. Perhaps I'll even use the times I'm cleaning as chances for the computer to render, since this usually takes 45 minutes or more. I'll update as soon as I can.

Oooh, which score? Can I have a copy?

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

It's "The Map Room: Dawn," from Raiders of the Lost Ark. I have no qualms about sending you the PDF, but the guy who sent it to me might have a problem with it. I'll have to ask him. As soon as I get the OK, I'll give you a download link. Oh, and just some forewarning--it's very difficult to read, since it's a bad copy of a rather messily-handwritten score. I don't have the original, so there's nothing I can do. If you've got a good ear, though, you can guess what the harder-to-read notes are with reasonable accuracy. Just don't expect a high-res scan of a professionally engraved conductor's score.

Heh. Doesn't matter the condition. I like hearing that the pros have manuscript just as bad as me.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

I have an incredible musician for a friend, and his musical handwriting is all but illegible. You're in good company. Well, I sent a message to the score guy, so now I'm just waiting for a reply. Sorry about this...I just don't want to upset him, since he sent this to me free of charge.

Don't worry about it... Oh, and to get back on topic, I was at Disneyland yesterday and forgot my camera. However, the back end of the Haunted Mansion queue was blocked off anyway. I'll try and get back again.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Aw, that's too bad. Well, my sister is there today and I've employed her to snap some shots for me. (The back of the mansion isn't blocked off anymore today, by the way.) If all goes well, I'll have lots of shots in a couple days' time. But any photos anyone else can provide are very welcome! I'm sure she won't capture everything I need...even I'd have trouble doing that myself.

EDIT: Turns out I'll probably have an opportunity to visit the park late in July. Any photos I'll need at that point I should be able to take myself, but the more people contribute now, the better.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Wow! Great job! I too work in Blender but I'm still very novice when it comes to complex modeling.

Oh, and have you seen this site?

http://www.bendintheriver.net/

He's doing some great stuff modeling Pirates of the Caribbean (and New Orleans Square around it) using Blender.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Thanks! I'm no expert at 3D modeling myself; this whole project has been a great learning experience for me.

Thanks also for the link. I have had the pleasure of seeing that site--despite poor web design, the content is magnificent and I never cease to be impressed by the detail and accuracy of his work. I've even thought (on several occasions) about asking him if he'd like to join forces with me, but I figure his model is way too poly-heavy for my current dinosaur of a computer. Once I get my new system, perhaps I'll contact him then.

Re: Disneyland in 3D!

Modeling progress has been rather slow over the last few days. I'm awaiting a reply regarding a large number of Haunted Mansion and Indy blueprints that I may be purchasing soon. In the mean time, I've been mostly working (slowly) on the new mansion facade. I'm sorry I can't show you guys anything new at the moment; after all, the facade has already been modeled in far more detail than you see here--check out Haunted Dimensions and this other guy's gallery.

Anyway, as proof that I've been getting stuff done, here's a not-too-pretty little render. The roofing has been installed; I actually have a conflict between different blueprints about where one of the edges actually is, so today will be partly about solving that mystery. Also difficult to see are the nice little modillions underneath the molding between the second and third floors. I've only installed these on this side of the house, and not even all of them are in place, but if I don't quit early like I did with this model's predecessor, there will be a full set of modillions on this guy.

Remember...I'm still very, VERY open to all input in the form of critiques, observations, photos, blueprints, aerial photos, anecdotes, links, whatever...
