Rope dropping

I have heard about the rope dropping. What exactly does that mean? As far as I understand it’s a small ceremony in the morning to open the park. Can anyone tell me what happens? Any pictures?
(I know it’s a silly question, sorry)

Re: Rope dropping

The drop the big rope blocking off Main Street from the rest of the park, and then everyone tramples over everyone else to get to Peter Pan and Space Mountain.

This is true. But it doesn't happen every day. They don't do it on early entry days do they?

Re: Rope dropping

Yes they do it on early entry days too. The EE people can bypass the rope.

Re: Rope dropping

Even on Early Entry, don't they still have a rope up at the entrances to Frontier/Adventureland? They used to anyway according to my wife who remembers waiting at the rope while the CM took his time from a little girl wearing a Mickey watch in the front.

(BOLD mine) I like the sound of that. It sounds better than "stampede".

Re: Rope dropping

For me the rope drop is a magical thing, as is the countdown I have seen them do at the entry gates before letting people enter the park for the day. Now i have only done the rope drop a handful of times, and I have only heard the countdown twice (and actually now that I think of it, that may have been a large group waiting to get into the park and not an "official thing".

For me, being at the rope drop still gives me butterflies.

Okay then they do it everyday? Because there have been days where it seems they let nobody in before opening. Is this because the max number of people have already been let in for rope drop?

Re: Rope dropping

Early entry doesn't take place every day, but rope drop does. They also play music as everyone tries to avoid being trampled over ... LOL!

Re: Rope dropping

When I was at the rope drop on April 27th, a magical thing happened. No one ran. There was no trampling, pushing, shoving or trampling.

Once in a lifetime Disney magic.

Btw, I'm really not eight.

So I'm sitting at my computer thinking, hey, I need a creative signature so that people on micechat will remember me. And then it hits me: I'll just type it up!
I sure am creative.

Re: Rope dropping

oh and you can't forget the CM's screaming "PLEASE DON'T RUN!!!" and "WALK PLEASE!!" while the stampede slowly picks up momentum.
