Thursday, May 24th Grad Night trip report

Alright this is my first ever trip report so bear with me, and I don't have any pictures but I didn't want to carry the camera all night.
    9:30 - 12:00 California Adventure
This started off awful, the people that checked bags at my school did a horrible job, and Disney Security didn't really check because I saw at least four kids doing drug deals for pills in the bathroom right when you enter California Adventure. Kids are so stupid.
The first ride was California Screamin and it was probably the most fun I had that night, it was also the first time I've ridden it in three years since it was closed when I was down there in August of 2005.
The second ride was my first ever ride on Sorin Over California. I always figured it would be a lame ride but it was actually pretty awesome. After that my group headed over to Disneyland.
The first ride at Disneyland was Pirates of the Caribbean even though I told my group it would be better to go on a ride like Space Mountain or Indiana Jones first, I didn't get to go on either rides that night. This was the first time I got to see the Jacks, Barbossa, and Davey Jones, it didn't really change the ride for me much.
We went over to Indy and saw that the line went all the way over to Pirates of the Caribbean, so that was out of the question. So the second ride was the Haunted Mansion, it was alright. I've never been a huge fan of it, but I wanted to see the changes to the attic.
The third ride was my first ever and last ride on Small World. It wasn't the song that got me, it was how that stupid ride dragged on, and on, and on, and on.
After that my group decided to go spend the rest of the night over by the music. We had been in the park for two hours at this point and I said screw that. I paid $180 for Disneyland and the rides! Not dancing. So I got my chance to experience Disneyland all by myself for the first time ever.
The first stop was Adventure Land and hopefully Indy, but the line was even longer, I was getting tired, and I didn't want to wait for two hours for that ride. So I headed over to The Jungle Cruise and waited in line for about 20 minutes to ride it. The skipper was pretty funny but nobody laughed. Again, this was my first trip on this ride in three years.
After that it was Star Tours, I don't even know why I decided to go on it. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but I just think its an awful ride. Lucas and Disney really need to create a new show there. Again, I didn't go on this my second trip so it was my first time in three years.
The line for the Matterhorn was short, so that made me happy since I love that ride. I waited in line for about 20 minutes and rode it alone.
After that I noticed Fantasy Land was open, and I finally got to ride Alice, Peter Pan, and Snow White. I really didn't enjoy Alice or Peter Pan. And I rode on Pinocchio for the first time in three years.
After that I got a cheese burger at that place by Pinocchio, then I headed over and admired the Submarine Voyage. I didn't realize how big the subs were, and that big fish really is big! I could also make out the diver's green air tank. The Seagulls were saying Mine, lights were on in the caverns, and there were a couple of guys on the docks with the Subs. And the last thing I did that night was ride the Buzz ride since the line wasn't long. And it shut down about six times. Space Ranges, please stay seated!
I was very disappointed. It just wasn't Disneyland. The atmosphere and magic were missing, and its obvious that has to do with all the moron teenagers, the rap music, the lights, etc. I've had many dreams that I was at Disneyland in the past year, only to wake up and be disappointed that it didn't happen because I love the place so much. But this morning it really didn't even feel like I was at Disneyland.

Re: Thursday, May 24th Grad Night trip report

I chaperoned grad night on May 17. There are several key things that can make this a bad experience for these teens forking out all that money. (1) At Disneyland, there are only about 10 rides open. The night I was there, all of Fantasyland was closed, including the Matterhorn. When I went to grad night many years ago, ALL of Disneyland was open! Closing half the park makes the lines and crowds unbearable. (2) Ok, I am showing my age here... but the sub woofers that were blaring around the castle were SO LOUD that it made it hard to think! Combine that with the wisdom of putting the chaperons at the Plaza Gardens, and it makes for a very stressful evening. (3) Bus check-in took almost an hour, so our students didn't get to spend much time at DCA.

Yet you didn't say anything to the chaperones or security? If that were me I'd be making sure their rear ends got kicked out of the parks and arrested on drug charges. Yes I'm mean. Sue me.

I thought about this too, and as an adult, it would be easy to drop the hammer on people behaving like this.

As a teen however, I think it can be a tall order to ask them to act, get a security CM, etc. It's likely that it happened so quickly it would be hard to identify the suspects.

Sorry you had such a bad time. Personally I had a great time during my gradnite. For me Disneyland was entirely open and we had no incidents with the other schools. The downside was by the end ofthe night we were exhausted.

What am I going to do, tell on half the school? Everyone would find out I did it. And I didn't have a TERRIBLE time, it was just, meh, disappointing, not great like I was expecting.

Sorry to hear that you didn't have the greatest time! If you were on Buzz at around 330 or 400 the stops were actually due to malfunctions with the load tapeswitch intrusion sensor. We cycled out to fix it and they discovered that it was just because kids were jumping into the cruisers too roughly and hitting the sensor!

    Sorry about any inconvenience!

I'd have done the same thing. In fact, I did do something like that once.

Let up on him. There's politics and a lot of other things that go along with being a teen in high school.

As for your trip...well, I tried to warn ya :/ Do yourself a favor, and go again with people that you care about (and that care about you) on a normal day at the park. It will heal you.

I went to grad nite twice...both times were awful. As you said, it's just not Disneyland, you pay more than you should be for admittance for a few measly hours when you can't ride mostly anything, etc. With the "hip" music they blast (and they play it on a loop, even worse), it kills the atmosphere. I guess maybe some kids like that, but if you've known Disneyland the way it usually is, it hurts to see the mayham unfold.

Re: Thursday, May 24th Grad Night trip report

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have a good time on your trip.
I was also there at grad nite on the 24th and I thought it was really fun. That being said, yes the lines were long, rides were closed (scheduled and unscheduled), the "clubs" were pretty lame.
But all night with my friends is what made it well worth the money and the 8 hr bus ride.
Got to Timon parking lot at 8:15, couldn't get off till 9:30. Ran to security, minimal pat down and look through.
    Ca. Adv rides went on
    ToT
    Ca. Screamin
Went to eat, there's a few options but we got pizza, large cookie, and bottled soda.
    Off to DL
Ran to IJA (still almost an hour wait)
Pirates broke down when we got there, HM line was really long because of pirates break down.
Went to KIIS club in front of castle. (
Lets just say, a mass group of pushing, and moving with the croud in a hot cramped space... not fun...)
    Tea cups
Splash mountain (longest wait, tied with IJA)
    Haunted mansion
    pirates broke down again
Tea cups again (different group of friends this time)
friend entered dancing contest, quite funny
Shopping on main st. (do this earlier in the day, too many people and most of the stuff was sold out)
    Matterhorn as the sun rose.
Long walk back to the bus.

I can see where things can turn bad for those going to grad nite. As C-Hox said, Grad nite at DL does not feel like DL, blaring music, and atmosphere are completely different.

Here's my advice to anyone who's going in the future.
Stick with at least one person you can go with the entire night, or get phone numbers from other people you can hang out with in other groups. You will probably split from a few of your original group (some people just want to do different things.)
Buy what you want from the stores early, I know carrying it around isn't fun, but at least you’ll have it.
Know this isn't the disneyland that you go to with your family on vacation.

Finally, try and have fun with your friends. You’re in disneyland, graduating soon (or already have), be a kid and somewhat obnoxious . Make it a highlight of your sr. year.

Re: Thursday, May 24th Grad Night trip report

    I was there too!

Let me give you future grads heads up about this thing: (including the excellent advice from above) It goes quick, REALLY quick, and (like above) DO NOT expect the vacation Disneyland where you hit up every ride, because it will never, ever happen. (unless your ride list includes every minor attraction in the park) Complaining about wait times only worsens the experience. Just stick with friends, and you will have a great time. Just don't complain about rides.

So, trip report. After the very long bus ride there (did get a chance to catch up on the last two pirate movies before the third, though!), we arrived in Disneyland only to wait another long hour 'til managment released us. Finally, in DCA, I had to do it on my own. My group was from a different school whose tickets did not allow them into this park for some reason.

Now, here comes the start of the "pirority rides" situation. ToT had the first ever 120 minute wait I had ever seen in my life. All of the other attractions were bust. Man, do those teenagers love free-falling. (well, being one, I've never been so great with it, but I do love the ride) Most of this is the "let's go on again and again and again! factor". I went on California Screamin' and Soarin'...really, nothing waits. I also did Mike and Sulley with a wonderous zero minute wait...after the ride I could see why. (the CMs were so excited to see somebody, though)

Finally, at 11:15, I was transported to Disneyland and went the rope drop at TL. My plan: speedwalk to Space, meet up with group. The security guards kept reminding us "Don't run...we will catch you". Okay, 11:30, rope is dropped...

"RUN!!!!!!!!!!" is the first thing I hear and they just ambush. The security guards shrug. Thinking, "screw it", I go into Buzz, first one on, and I got the best score I've gotten on the ride ever. Next Star Tours, and by then Space was a 100 minute wait, so I decided to join up with my group...at the Space exit. (let's just say I didn't get to ride space that night)

After some sulking, I cheered up and decided that this wasn't about the rides, it's about the experience, and then all of the sudden grad nite worked for me. We did Splash Mountain, HM, waited for Pirates...it broke down and then did Jungle Cruise.

About now it was 3 AM, and I broke off from the group when they went on Indy, and decided to try Space. On route, I reminded myself of the warning to buy things early, so I collected a few things in Star Trader, but alas, I was too late and ended up waiting thirty minutes to pay.

Space was STILL 120 minutes (again the "let's go on again! factor")...and it being 3:45, that was too risky of a wait time. (had to be back at the bus at 6 AM, thirty minute walk back to lot) I meandered around, my group still in the Indy line, and I happened to stumble upon Pirates JUST reopening! I only waited twenty minutes and got into a really cramped boat...but I got to ride Pirates!

At 4:30, I ate a bit and went over to examine the Sub area. Noticing the short fifteen minute wait on Peter Pan, I rode it only to discover the park clearing out. At 5:15...you just get really tired and I met up with my group to say goodbyes.

At 5:30...I was out. Back to bus.

About 28 hours later, my internal clock is finally back to speed. It's wild, crazy and very strange of an experience. I have to say to future graduates: if you don't go, that's fine. It's just not that awesome of an experience. It's intresting for the average-to-hardcore Disneyland fan, but it's also very annoying, too. The park is filled with screaming kids and the most often phrase heard is "DISNEYLAND WHOOOO!!"...but it's also a lot of fun...that's it.

As long as you don't make this your "DL trip of the year", you'll be fine and have fun...
