    Re: Monstro is now BLUE!

That's quite the pretty blue color! I think it's not a bad color and it's nice to see Monstro looking very, very clean. :]

And wow, the black whale really scares me! I'd never have been able to go on that ride when I was younger if it looked like that!

I do think the Monstro in the Pinocchio is a dark blue/black, but the lighting itself is very, very dark, so it is hard to say the true color that is intended. I honestly think that a slightly darker blue (lighter than the previous and darker than the current shade) would be best, but I'm sure as the paint fades it'll turn into a more natural color.

Interestingly enough, for the original poster art for Storybook Land, Monstro is definitely blue!

and here's another undated 1950's pic of Monstro:

It's typical to use a red colored filter for outside shots w/ sky esp in postcards....
when one sees dark blue objects thru them, this makes it seem black.

See the photo w/ the "black" monstro... look at the sky behind it... really blue.. that's usually
a clear indicator that a filter was used.

Hard to believe, but color really can be subjective; like Nish said, what you are looking at could be the result of a filter. In addition, these slides are at least 50 years old; bringing color back to a faded slide can be a tricky science. And, even without a filter, the way the sun hits an object (depending upon what time of day) can make a difference as well. Personally, my guess is that the whale was originally black (with possible blue cast/undertones). In the Haunted Mansion, the caretaker in the graveyard is dressed in garishly bright clothes; however, with the dim lighting, you'd never know it because his clothes look normal. Disney has to overcompensate the saturation of the colors to account for the lighting.

Great stuff, Dave; thanks for providing such a great resource. That attraction poster is especially interesting: it doesn't get much bluer than that!
