Subs were slow to reopen!

I say this because originally, the Submarine Voyage took a mere 9 MONTHS to build and open. That's right, the predecessor on that spot, the Viewliner, did not close until September 15, 1958. The subs were up and running on June 6, 1959. What do you think about that?

Re: Subs were slow to reopen!

I dont know the history of the original subs enough but is it possible a lot of the prework was done backstage so everything was ready to go and when the area closed it was mostly installation? This time, I think there was a lot more to it, not only because of the advancement in technology buy getting buy off on plans, deveopment, plus they had to demo and rebuild and I assume safety standards and getting DOSH takes more.

Those were simplier times back then. I am just happy they will be back soon (11 days right) hey we are almost to single digits!!

Oh and Welcome to MiceChat!

Re: Subs were slow to reopen!

This project also involved the cleaning up and repair of a lagoon that has been sitting there unused for how many years? There may have been extensive work done just to get the lagoon and caves into a state where they can then really begin construction. Add on top of that all the new safety and construction requirements and regulations and it is no wonder that it takes much longer now.

Cool Re: Subs were slow to reopen!

and the entire Original Park took One Year to build...

Nine (9) months to build the original submarine lagoon and the attraction; nine (9) years of gestation to get the New Version.

How long does it take WDI to screw in a light bulb?

but with decades between E-ticket attractions (brand new, or complete over-hauls of Old Favorites), just say "thank you" and move to the back of the queue...

Re: Subs were slow to reopen!

The main reason this attraction took years to get back was it was originally planned to be turned into Alantis based off the movie but, that didnt happen because the movie did so poorly it got thrown into the trash! That is a big reason it has taken so long and been closed so long!

Re: Subs were slow to reopen!

It may have only taken nine months to build the original subs, but who knows how long the attraction was being worked on at WED? Actual construction work aside, Nemo also had to wait for the ride to be designed before the work could actually begin. Plus, building codes and regulations are stricter these days than they were in the '50s. Trust me, if Disneyland were built today, the original Disneyland as it stood in 1955, it would take much longer than a year.

Re: Subs were slow to reopen!

Anyway, so this thread isn't a total bust, look how remarkably similar the short-lived 1986 repainting looks compared to the current one:
