Should/Can They Accommodate Big People on Subs?

I suspect this topic will generate a variety of opinions and might deserve its own thread:

Should Disney accommodate large people on the Subs by allowing them to take more than one seat, or should they squeeze them in, or should they put "width limits" on the Subs and hope people will understand that this ride was designed in a different era than ours?

This is a very interesting post. I really have no comments, but in years past - when the subs were in operation way back when, this thought occurred to me - "Could they accomodate a large person on the Subs?"

I guess it would have to be almost like the height requirement for children to get on the 'bigger attractions' - you have to be a certain size. It's not for discrimination, but for the sake ones own safety as well as the safety of others.

What's more important is the guest's ability to exit the sub under they're own power since neither the CM's or their own family/friends/attendants are likely to be able to get them up the stairs.

That is particularly important in evacuations.

How they will be able to determine that, especially by CM judgment is an interesting question.

Seat space width is a minor capacity consideration that is much less important though there will be comfort issues.

Can They Accommadte Big People on Subs? (Moved Posts)

There will be a million problems possibly. I remember back in the day the subs would not operate if they we're too heavy or they would scrape on the bottom and cause the ride to go "code 101" aka - break down, so will the new subs have this problem? Or will they have to load like they do space mountain, ballparking the weight of the person and than putting them where needed?

Good question. We will be visiting in a few months and I'm a member of the big mans club. The last time I was on the subs I was about 10yrs old.
You can think I'm wrong, but that's no reason to quit thinking.

These are the same subs that have always been there - just repainted etc. So, my guess is that if they went 'code 101' before, they have the same possibility of going 'code 101' now.

Being a big person I have some mixed feelings about this. While I agree the best thing is to keep things moving and filling each sub to its capacity, I also think that allowing people like me (Yes, I'm big, but I'm trying to lose weight) to take an extra seat is a good accommodation. I'm not sure ultimately where I stand on the issue. As it is, I was lucky when I rode it during the CM preview. They underloaded the sub because no one was there and my gf and I were able to spread out a little.

Not to mention the fact that they squeezed two MORE seats on each sub in order to increase capacity. So....yeah. I'm thinking it might be a little tight in there regardless of size.

Re: Should/Can They Accommodate Big People on Subs?

If the CM's among us have any solid news on what the standard operating procedures in this area are (or if there are any SOP's for this), I think it would be a great service to supply that info. The more widely the protocols are circulated and well-known, the fewer misunderstandings and embarrassments.

I think a lot of people are in for a shock at how cramped it is. It was a big wakeup call when I got on there last night. I definitely did not remember how small the seats were(considering how young i was, not a surprise). But those who know me know I'm small. Sam and I sitting next to each other was close to cramped and I'm 150 lbs.

From what I have heard, the two more seats were not "squeezed on" but rather are the result of replacing the old desel engines with new electric engines which take up less space than the old ones.

Re: Should/Can They Accommodate Big People on Subs?

This post makes me very sad.

As a person who struggles with his weight and all the self-esteem issues that go with it, I go to Disneyland to make myself feel better about the world and my place in it.

How sad am I that for months, nay years, been excited about this ride reopening and now am filled with anxiety that I will cause a scene as I try to squeeze into a space not large enough for me.

I have even thought of the entrance to the subs... is it a classic "hole and narrow winding staircase"? Will I be laughed at for going into this?

I think this is something we should talk about, but I get very sad when people try to compare a height issue vs minumum height requirements and weight/size issues and what is considered normal. One is for safety and the other is a compromise.

This is the first time I have ever left a message on micechat and actually feel sad for leaving it but I encourage everyone to share their thoughts on it and I look forward to seeing your opinions.

The alternative viewing might be an option to them if they don't feel they can do the sub itself. I know the rule that you have to be able to walk stairs to ride. Since the dog can't ride, I figure I will be in the alternative room with her. My daughter is claustrophobic, so she will probably ride once to say she did.

It is a winding staircase and I would consider the entrance narrow.

Scroll about halfway down and you can see what the entrances look like. I don't think they have changed much, if at all.
