    Question about the Mark Twain...

Hello everyone! Well with the all the buzz going around the new Finding Nemo: Submarine Voyage, I would like to bring up another attraction, the Mark Twain.

Well, we all know that the Mark Twain Riverboat is going under a (somewhat - Thanks King of the Frogs) extensive refurb (which I am very glad Disney is doing and I think that the boat is looking great!), but I still question the top of the smokestacks - they are still gold from the 50th Anniversary festivities. It looks like they are pretty much done with refurbing the riverboat.

    So...

Do any of you know if Disney has any plans on changing the two smokestack tops back to their original color, which was black?

I personally miss the black themselves, the gold doesn't really fit in my opinion and it really is the last remaining remnant of the 50th celebration.

Here's an older picture for those of you who forgot what the Mark Twain Riverboat looked like before the 50th:

    Thanks again!

I wish they'd remove th gold too. I wish DL would strive once again to present just a little bit of realism. Just a little. But I guess it's not in the cards.

Ummmm.... the gold would be traditional - going back to the 1958/59 drawings and launch photos to see what it was when built.

    Back to you soon.

As for the extensive refurb - replaced one deck and patched up a few things. The extensive part was underwater a few years ago. Looks prettier, though!

Well, after a few years, the exaust will build up, turning it black again.

King, check your records. The ship was launched before opening day (1955)...and always had black, traditional stacks. I can provide evidence if needed--but it's a pain...

    Oops!

    Steve - I hate it when you're right! I confused '54/'55 with '58/'59.

I'm looking at a slide my dad took in early 1956. Definitely black stacks. Wish they'd stay that way.

The gold on the stacks is not completely out of theme. Not every riverboat, and certainly not every one of that size (scaled, or course) would have been traditionally black. Twain is elegant.

I've got a book of photos of period Mississippi River steamboats that begs to differ with you...

I want them back to black. The black residue builds up around the top of the crowns. There is nothing they can do about it. Repainting would be futile. Painting them back to black would eliminate that bit of nastiness from our concious.
