Re: When was the "Partners" Statue put in?

There is an interesting story about that:

Seems the old school imagineers were aghast at the fact that during the 40th anniversary, they took the central plaza, and put in that big wheel of fortune thing that people would spin to win prizes. The place was also the sight of a daredevil who, during the circus promotion, would ride a motorcyle in the cage of death. They hated the fact that the view down Main Street was cluttered by eyesores, wrecking the view of the castle. So they devised this plan to put in a statue, that would be so revered by all, that no one would dare put a tacky promotion in its place again. And so: voila, the Partner's statue.

Just a side note: never view it from the entrance to Frontierland. It looks a little naughty.

Re: When was the "Partners" Statue put in?

In a podcast I heard, or in a book I read some time ago, I remember reading about how the statue was "controversial", because Walt expressly stated he didn't want his image or likeness in any of the parks. For that reason, certain members of the the Disney family, repeatedly refused to sign any rights to use Walt's image for a statue of him anywhere.

It wasn't until they died, and remaining family signed the rights to have Walt's statue (for a substantial sum of money), that the statue was built.

    So they say.

Diane Disney Miller will be sorry to learn that she has died. That just really will screw things up at Silverado Winery for a while.

Re: When was the "Partners" Statue put in?

I heard that Lillian Disney (Walt's wife) expressed displeasure over the Partners statue, and that she gave a comment something along the lines of, "Walt wouldn't like this one bit. Walt wanted Disneyland to be dedicated to the ideals that created America. Not be some tribute or shrine to him!"

But apparently she somewhat grudgingly accepted the idea of the statue...although I also heard she made some comment to Blaine Gibson (the sculptor) along the lines of "Oh great. You did have to pick one of those [expletive] neckties?" She apparently didn't like Walt's collection of Smoke Tree Ranch neckties very much.

Not to sound cheesy or anything, but you can't help but get a little emotional everytime you see "Partners". Even if it's a teency-weency emotional.

A-man didn't suggest either. He was probably disagreeing with the statement that "you can't help but get a little emotional..."

I was going to write the same thing. I like the statue, but I certainly don't get "emotional" (not even a teency-weency bit) when I see it.
