How bad are firework shows for the atmosphere?

While watching the awesome "Remember ..." fireworks show, I couldn't help but notice the amount of smoke and strong odor they produce. I began wonder, how bad for the environment are the fireworks?

Now, I know it's a hot button item in politics this year, but Global Warming is not anything new. I was born in 1982 and I'm from Los Angeles, so I've heard about the dangers of smog and the depletion of the Ozone layer since I was born. It just struck me that firework shows must take a toll on our atmosphere. I can't imagine that those nebular vapors released by these explosions just dissipate into an innocuous cloud of nothing. I did a little research and couldn't find a definitive study (except for one regarding toxic perchlorate levels in lakes after July 4th firework displays), but what I did find merely stated that there is a link between fireworks and atmospheric pollution.

Maybe Disney uses some sort of eco-safe (if such a thing even exists) fireworks? I did find this article which says Disney developed more environmentally sound propulsion methods, but it says nothing of the fireworks themselves.

Anyone have some insight to share?

DLR, aswell as certain shots in Epcot, use something called Air Launched Fireworks(ALF) Not only do they provide a better spectacle for the viewers, but they also eliminate the need for the traditional black powder lift charge. Therefore, there isw absolutely no smoke residue on the ground.

Once launched, I believe that the devces are all traditional with the exception of a computerized explosion. Disney is experimenting with smokeless fireworks but the main problem with these is that they tend to burn very quickly and may be unpredictable. Also, Disney has experimented with reusable shells. The shell would be launched, exploded and would fall to the ground more or less intact with the exception of the breaking point.

Disney invented the ALF and will probably continue to research and develop different technologies for their shows.

You think it is bad now? I don't know if you remember the old show (and arguably better if not then at least similar) "Fantasy in the Sky". The smoke coming from that was a LOT worse than it is now. If anything now it is really nice because you can actually see the fireworks.

How bad is the smoke?! Not bad at all! If it was, they would not package it and sell it at mini marts by the carton.

Everything runs on smoke you know. If it escapes the item often stops working. If the smoke escapes from my computer monitor for example. The monitor no longer turns on.

Re: How bad are firework shows for the atmosphere?

A couple of years ago they had an article in the Orange County Register about Disney inventing a new firework that give off over 50% less smoke. Not only did they invent something much better for the air they ALSO gave to patent to charity.

So when people on MiceChat say Disney only cares about money and the bottom line, I think about this gesture. Disney could have made a lot of cash off of the new fireworks, but they also knew many companies would still use the heavy smoke emitting, old fireworks.

The Disney Corporation gets a huge thumbs up from me on this!

It wasn't a new firework that they invented. It was the manner by which it was launched. ALF, as I mentioned in my previous post.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Either way it was quite a cool thing Disney did by giving the patent on that away.

If any of this makes sense, congradulations, you're smarter than me:

    http://www.aqmd.gov/webappl/fim/prog...?fac_id=800189

Long story short: Yes the Disneyland fireworks are a pollution nightmare, and Disney and the SCAQMD have been at odds over them ever since they expanded the schedule from 100 days to 250 days. My basic understanding is, that a company like Disney is allowed a certain level of pollution per year, and to allow for the level of particulate matter that is spewed into the air by the fireworks, Disney has had to cut back drastically on other forms of pullotion at the resort.

Maybe that's why the burgers taste horrible now. Blech.

Rest assured though, that while pretty nasty, Disney is in full compliance with the law. Besides it's only the people in Fullerton and Placentia that have to worry about it.

I'm not going to go full blown politics here but I don't think people are the exact cause of global warming. Fire occurs naturally. Disney uses Air Launched fireworks which helps eliminate some of the smoke, as was mentioned above. I believe that in order to help "Save the environment" Disney is sharing the patent with other theme parks (i think, anyway)

It's not just the smoke in the air. I remember as a child, going to the back of Disneyland, which at the time was Global Van Lines. Over there we would literally have chunks of ash raining down on us.

I don't recall any such thing nowadays and that was back in the mid-late 70s.

I can't imagine they're good for the atmosphere, but global warming is a problem that affects the entire globe (obviously) and I can't imagine all the fireworks on the planet combined are even on the list of major contributing factors. The Autopia are probably much worse for the planet in global warming terms than the fireworks ever would be.
