    Closest hotel to Disneyland?

Hopefully I'm posting this question in the right forum - I don't get to read micechat as often as I used to...so please forgive me.
Anyway, I've gone to Disneyland every year since I was 4. Now that I am an adult, my wife and I figured out that the Tropicana Inn was perfect for two people to stay since it's so close to the Disneyland and DCA entrances and that's where we've stayed for the past several years.
However, this year we are taking our newborn son and our nieces (4 and 6 years old). We are considering giving them the ultimate Disney experience and staying in either the Grand Californian or the Disneyland hotel. As a kid, I always wanted to stay in the Disneyland hotel. The idea of being able to step outside the hotel and board the monorail directly to Tomorrowland always seemed so cool and swore I would stay there when I was a "grown up." However, I noticed that the station is now a distance away from the hotel now since Downtown Disney went in.
Ok, so my question is...which hotel would be the closest and most convenient for shuttling little kids back and forth for naps (and feedings for the infant)? How far of a walk is it from the Disneyland hotel to the Downtown Disney monorail station? Would anybody recommend that as the best option, or should we just stay at our usual good neighbor hotel and skip some of the Disney magic? We are planning on going during the off-season during the middle of the week, so crowds shouldn't be a factor in this decision. Any input would be great!

Most definetly Disney's Grand Californian Hotel. It has it's own private entrance into DCA and is not a far walk at all from Disneyland. Actually, the monorail might be closer to the Grand Californian than it is to the Disneyland Hotel.

I wouldn't say private entrance. More like, just a hotel entrance.

That's a tough one... I think that the Disneyland Hotel might be much easier, because it's end of DTD closest to the monorail station, while GCH's entrance is in between Sephora and Libby Lu closer to the tram station. Besides, you'd probably find yourself closer to the monorail more often than the GCH entrance in DCA. Even if the two entrances are about the same distance from the DTD monorail station, the walk from the monorail to DH is easier and less crowded.

If you've always wanted to go to the Disneyland Hotel since you were a kid, I say indulge yourself and go. Fulfill that childhood dream! Plus you've got the Neverland pool complex to enjoy and the nice wine bar under Hook's Pointe restaurant.

The monorail is the same distance from the hotel towers that it's always been. Just the scenery getting there has changed.

The GCH is a good choice as well. It's close to DL and you won't have to wait in a line to go to and from the hotel... with the exception of the security check point. And it's ammenities are much nicer. Yet your kids would enjoy the pool at the DLH more than the ones at the GCH.

    Just a thought....

The GCH is closer, but sometimes the walk inside the GCH down the halls to get to your room can be very long!

If you book at the DLH, ask for the Sierra Tower as it's the closest to DTD and the swimming pool /Lost Bar/Hook's pointe if you're planning to go to any of those.

I'm sure you will love either hotel!

Agreed! Plus your the ages of the kids, they'd love the Neverland Pool and probably get a kick out of the Tinkerbell border in the rooms and such.

When is your trip? They are offering room discounts for Annual Passholders from August 19 - December 15, 2007 at the resort Hotels. It may make sense to buy one AP to get the room discount.
    Have fun!

Understand, too, that some of the hotels on Harbor Blvd are MUCH cheaper than the on site ones--and the walking distance to the entrances of D-land and DCA are, by far shorter, IMHO.

When I saw the term "closet hotel" I thought that was what this thread was about.

    Peace!

Just last week was my VERY FIRST visit to DL, and we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel. It was WONDERFUL - I say Disneyland Hotel all the way!!! It's extremely close to Downtown Disney and the Monorail, and close to DCA if you go through Grand Californian and use their entrance. The Disneyland Hotel had a wonderful view for us, and the rooms are great! And if you've always wanted to stay there, I truly think you should! You won't regret it

Couldn't have put it better myself.

The monorail station is in the exact same place it has always been, it's just that the Garden Rooms were removed to make way for the Rainforrest Cafe. Try for the Marina or Sierra Towers as they are the closest to the DTD Monorail station.

Thats what I was thinking also. The Disneyland Hotel is about the same distance as Hojos if you don't take the Monorail. And if you are in Adventureland, the walk to the Monorail, especially with the new line, could be longer than just walking back thru DTD.

But as this isn't truly about the closest hotel, I would vote for the Disneyland Hotel.

There really is nothing closer to the Main Gate than the Grand Californian. People always say different, but Grand Californian is it in terms of time. Remember, you'll be waiting at lights at the Harbor Blvd crosswalk.

Also, even with the sprawling corridors of Grand Californian, you can still shave off time by using the Napa Rose elevators if your room is assigned over that way; cutting through DCA, and using the fire escape that comes out at La Brea bakery, which literally puts you within steps of the baggage check.

The walk from the DH to the Monorail is not much at all, and I'm pretty sure it's closer than the Grand Californian.

To the main gates, however, the Grand California is much closer.
