So I braved the heat and fought the crowds of raving tweenies to see the first showing of the all new High School Musical 2: School's Out!
Even though I enjoyed it, I still feel it's a huge loss to have it replace the original Pep Rally. The audience participation in the Pep Rally was a lot more creative and interactive. In School's Out it feels like they bring kids up just because they have to. As for the performers, I have to say I'm mostly impressed. The guys need some fine tuning as they did lose the notes on the higher registers, especially during "I Don't Dance" (My personal favorite song), but the girl was simply amazing!
Unfortunately I don't feel HSM2 has as much to teach us as the original did and thus School's Out! becomes mere entertainment while the Pep Rally! had a message behind it.
I hope this doesn't entirely replace the Pep Rally, but complement it. Maybe do the Pep Rally in the morning and then School's Out! a few hours later. I don't think it would be that big of a deal for a crowdless DCA to cut 3 perfomanes to 2 as long as they are distinct. Quite frankly, I think that would bring the crowds in and keep them there. It would actually help turn DCA into an all-day park.
Anyway, for those interested, the song list was: "What Time Is It", "Work This Out", "You Are The Music In Me", "I Don't Dance", "All For One" and shorter version of "We're All In This Together".
And without further ado, the video everyones been waiting for:
