Let Loose for a While in the Disney Archives

So here's a though I had. If you had a period of time, say anywhere from one to five hours, in the Disney Archives in Burbank, what would you spend the time looking at. Remember, no photographs or xerox copies of the documents and material you're looking at, just you and free reign of the archives for a short amount of time.

I wouldn't know where to start, myself, but I'd go through the original concept art for Disneyland, original attraction concept art, blueprints, etc, then I'd look at original animation cells and see if I could find first-draft scripts for some Disney classics. If I had time left over, I'd go through the sheet music library.

My dd and I just watched the DVD Walt: Man behind the myth. They had lots of footage of DL's beginning. I would love to look at old photos of Walt in the orange grove...

Come on, it's the Disney archives! It's the repository of original art, personal possessions of Walt, not to mention a copy of every single pin-trading pin ever... Where do you want to go?

I would look at cartoon concept drawings. What was the first sketch of Peter Pan, Snow White, Mickey Mouse. Besides they are what put disney on the map

I'd definitely hit the blueprints section with a pencil and tracing paper. I'm always on the lookout for attraction blueprints. After that, I'd see if I could find the conductor's score for Mark Mancina's The Haunted Mansion. I'd really like to study the score.

I've been in actually, and knowing where to go...they had some of the original steamboat willie drawings out, these huge file drawers with original drawings from each cartoon and feature...and then on to the maquette storage, to get a good look at the original scary tree figure from nightmare before christmas...then on to the display section where they design the emporium window displays for disneyland...

I'd see if they have one of these:

Then I'd look at the rest they have, and see how their collection compares to mine. Course, I have more than 250, so who knows...

There's too many things to look at, and I have a hard time making decisions, so I think my head would just explode and that would be the end of it.

So on which section of the Archives would your head explode? Would your gore splatter all over the pin archives, would grey matter make its way into the document repository...?

I'd be all over the attraction models.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Like you basebone, I would be more inclined to ponder the theme park memorabilia than that of animation and live action film.

There isn't one central "archive" there is the Dave Smith studio archives, the photo archives, the Feature Animation Research Library, and the Imangineering Research Library. There are also archives and libraries with publishing and tv animation, as well as each park has creative groups with archives of one form or another.

Lots of stuff in lots of places.

Of course, I'd like to review any shred of paper dealing with the building/aquisition of the trains, and the design of the railroad.

I'm proud to say that if anyone does get access to the Studio Archives, they will find copies of both my books among the collections.

Re: Let Loose for a While in the Disney Archives

Like I do when I am at the library, I go where the isles take me. I like to discover new things on their own without some specific purpose. Not that there is anything wrong with going for one thing. I just personally would walk up and down the isles or go through the drawers and if something catchs my fancy, look at it, read it or touch it.

What an awesome experience either way though!
