    Moonliner??

Can someone explain the purpose of the Moonliner? I mean i saw it and it looks cool but i didn't get the chance to really investigate it. Is it a monument? Whats the history behind it?

It used to be the frontispiece for the Mission to the Moon/Mission to Mars attraction. Pizza Port used to be that ride.

Mission to the Moon opened in 1955 with TWA as the sponsor.

Thanks melmel. was it removed for a time? If it was I never noticed it there was a gap there when I did not visit the park much at all so I'm wondering did it leave when I did and come back when I did.

    Re: Moonliner??

Yes, it was removed in 1967 with the "New Tomorrowland" and then not seen back until "New Tomorrowland 98"... which I see as sort of ironic. The MiceChatters beg for dead attractions to be returned... one dead landmark is resuscitated... and it is lumped in with a misguided "horrible" project. Oh, the irony.

We must give thanks for what we are lucky enough to get. We got the Moonliner back. That isn't enough? You need Mission to Mars the entire ride back too??

The pizza port Moonliner is a much smaller version of the orginal Moonliner, which sat on the ground and towered over Tomorrowland. Technically we didn't get back the original moonliner.

Well, it's about 2/3 of the size of the original. Good enough for me. But the original musta been HUGE.

Does anyone know what finally became of the original Moonliner? Was it scraped? Or does it still exist?

You can find an excellent discussion of the Moonliner, Rocket To The Moon and the 2/3 version here:

Um... no offense... but that just seems like a really lame ride.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

By today's standards, perhaps. In 1955 it was unlike anything ever seen before and was popular. Thirty years from now Star Tours may seem quaint, also.

    Re: Moonliner??

The Moonliner was a COOL ride in its day. Plus, it looked really great in TL.

When they ruined, er, re-did TL the removed the Moonliner and placed a "Homage" to the ride in it's place.

There are similar homages to other lost rides around the park. In Star Tours you can see the microscope from Adventures Thru Innerspace in the film. ATIM was in the building that now houses Star Tours. There are many more throughout the park - one of my favorite little Disney touches.
