The Disembodied Scream of Death - Abominable, but not the Snowman

If you have a quiet bobsled in Matterhorn mountain, listen closely toward the top of the lift hill, when you are equal with the projected snowfall on scrim. You will hear, over the clanking of the chain lift and maybe a few growls of the abominable snowman, a high-pitched woman's voice, screaming.

I never noticed the scream until a recent visit, so we rode again just to be sure. There was no mistaking it that time - our bobsled only had four guys in it, and the other track had no bobsled in sight.

For reference, the scream I am talking about can be heard in this YouTube video (not mine) at 0:53 (the timer seems to count backwards, so in that case it's at 2:00).

I'm pretty sure you can also hear it at 1:27.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=http:...?v=EOjfefJ3LPIWhat is the purpose of a recorded scream? Is it to play up the moment that something terrifying lives in the icy caves? Is this the only place (besides recorded screams in CA Screamin's soundtrack) that you can hear such a thing, if everyone keeps quiet? And aren't there enough screams in the park as it is?

Would someone care to enlighten me as to the purpose of The Disembodied Scream of DEATH???

I didn't notice it until my last visit. I'm not sure what the purpose is though... I thought I had imagined it.

I think I heard it... But wrote it off as my sister.

I'll have to listen next time. But your title for the scream is creeping me out, man!

I say that we create a really cool Urban Legend for it!

I think they added that with all of the other sound effects (wind, crystals, etc.) in the 1978 expansion. Yes, there are screams there...in fact I think there are a couple male screams too.

Do you know why they added screams? Or just that they were added?

In the Haunted Mansion, the portrait chamber (elevator) has a recorded scream. I didn't know that until I listened to the recorded soundtrack, because guests are always screaming at that point

As for the Matterhorn, it's probably just to encourage some excitement, but could also be a warning for those that scare easily. Some non-knowledgeable guests look at the Matterhorn and don't think it's a thrill ride.

I think they add some sounds for ambience. I have never noticed this before on the Matterhorn.

I noticed on my first visit to Alien Encounter at WDW that someone screamed "My Mother in Law" upon the appearence of the Alien, and then heard the same thing again on my second visit. I then heard the entire "soundtrack" to the attraction and it had screams and "guest" comments throughout.

I noticed the screams in the elevator, but not the one in the Matterhorn.

While I find it strange that there is recoreded screams on Matterhorn, I also found it even more strange to hear shrills of girls coming for ToT when it was being tested and nobody was riding it

Interesting catch, 2DieFR! In hindsight, I recall hearing this, but never realized it was a recorded sound effect. I never paid enough attention to realize it was recorded, and it always simply registered as another guest screaming.

    Interesting, though.

Not to derail the topic too much, but while we are on the subject, I do recall, on Space Mountain before the 2 year refurb, hearing the rumble of the rockets running along the tracks as you walked past the huge viewing windows looking out into space. I remember it going 101, and then after watching them turn the lights on, and seeing the rockets stopped, still being able to hear the rumble go over head.

Although, having experienced an E-stop on Space Mountain before, I now realize it may have just been the other rockets still careening down the track before hitting their designated break zone.

Strange though, I remember the rumble continuing long after all the rockets had stopped!?
