    Memories of Disneyland's Construction

In honor of Disneyland's 50th birthday, I think it would be fun to share memories of its construction.

Now I do not date back to 1954, but I can remember the construction of Pirates of the Caribbean. When it was being constructed, the usual tall plywood fence obscured the vision of what was being built. However, tree house was open! I remember climbing up the tree house to look down into this deep and immense hole that was being dug. It seemed enormous to me, but of course sizes seem larger when you are young so I don't know if I remember it accurately. There was a steam shovel and some dump trucks in the bottom. There was a fence that surrounded the whole area. Otherwise, it was just dirt. I remember wondering what that attraction would be like when completed. I remember seeing Walt introduce the ride on TV but don't know if it was before or after I saw the hole.

What are some of your Disneyland construction memories?

It is not mine, but my mother remembers flying over Disneyland when it was being initially constructed. It seems her uncle owned a private airplane.

Could she make out the castle or Main Street? Or was it just orange groves then?

    Re: Memories of Disneyland's Construction

When I was at the park for a choir trip in early April 2003, everything in the river was docked for dry maintanence. I was completely shocked to discover that they hadn't fenced off the riverbed, so in the morning you could see to the bottom and see the crisscrossing pipes and track. A fence was put up as the day went on, but since this was the last day of the scheduled downtime, I was really surprised that they'd forget something so elementary. Of course, it was still way cool to see the river bottom.
