Re: Can You Identify Any of the Allusions D.C.A. Makes to Specific Places?

Am I crazy, or was that overpowering burnt coffee smell at D.C.A.'s entrance identical to the pervasive scent one finds at L.A.'s Union Station?

The Victorians are from Alamo Square (specifically Steiner Street) in San Francisco:

Great thread. It is great to see photos from the buildings that inspired the design in DCA.

The entrance to "Hollywood Blvd." is patterned after the "Hollywood and Highland" complex in Hollywood.

If you look closely through the topmost opening of the "arch" you'll see that the architects cleverly angled the structure to point directly to the famous HOLLYWOOD sign.

Just thought I would add the original pics (the B&W is from 1912)

Actually, both D.C.A.'s Hollywood gates and the Hollywood and Highland complex are re-creations of an inconceivably large movie set that was built for the D.W. Griffith film, "Intolerance".

After the film had been made, leaving the set standing was cheaper than demolishing it, so it became a fixture on the landscape. When Walt Disney first arrived in California in 1923, he went to see his brother who was in the hospital and, immediately afterwards, the younger Disney visited the "Intolerance" set.

Try spotting all the little people. The picture is amazing.

Again, the original site is not located in Hollywood.

By the way, I think I'd like D.C.A.'s elephants more if they were facing each other.
