Can You Identify Any of the Allusions D.C.A. Makes to Specific Places?

Several parts of the California park were inspired by specific places and things. Can you name any of them? And, even better.... Do you have pictures of them?

For example, one of the most obvious allusions is the Golden Dreams entrance, which is a replica of the rotunda from the Beaux-Arts Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

I think there is a thread on here that has all the signs, their references, and the historical backgrounds to them... if that is what you are referring to.

If this thread is asking the average non-Californian tourist if they can identify all the "landmarks" in the park, I don't think they could. Could a bunch of Californians? Probably. I can identify the San Fran area, the wharf, some of the Hollywoods sights, Bountiful Valley... but that's because I grew up in California.

Well, I'm thinking this thread might be a good game to play. And, it would be nice to be able to list all the different references in one place.

I can't find any other thread that does the same.

The bathroom area in the Hollywood backlot definitely is patterned after styles popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright who designed several houses in California. But most people aren't going to know this. Most Californians aren't going to know this either.

Yes, it looks like a cross between the Freeman House and the Storer House.

The textile blocks are from the Storer House, but the Freeman House seems to have provided most of the rest of the design.

Conor Flats is Edwards AFB. It makes me so nostagic. The midway out of Condor Flats past Grizzly Creek to San Fransico is highway 49, Gold Country.

The train station at the entrance replicates a part of the depot in downtown San Diego.

Just wanted to suggest that you post photos the DCA version, too, if you have them. I think it would be interesting to compare them, visually.

I'll give you some hints. The site is in Koreatown, not Hollywood. The business opened in 1929 on 6th Street as the first drive-in market.

That place is two blocks from where I live!

I don't have any pictures, but at the end of Hollywood Blvd. on the Hollywood PIctures Backlot are two facades that are miles away in the real Los Angeles. On the left hand side you have the El Capitan which is on Hollywood Blvd. near Highland Ave. and before that, you have part of the facade for the Wiltern Theatre which is located at Wishire Blvd. and Western Ave. in Koreatown/Mid-Wilshire Los Angeles.
