Proof to end the debate: July 17th or July 18th?

The ironic thing is that this evidence is found directly inside the park itself, specifically the new museum outside the 50th movie.

The photo is from a newspaper article about the official grand opening of Disneyland:

So there you go. July 17th was invited guests only. The actual day Disneyland was open to the public was July 18th. Hopefully we can put this whole debate to rest now. And somewhere I know Darkbeer is grinning.

I thought this was already settled. But I think it is right to celebrate the 17th over the 18th because that was the day it was dedicated.

Agreed. The 17th was the first fully operational day, and the day of the dedication, the big speech, all that good stuff.

This argument is right up there with the debate as to what day was the beginning of the 21st Century ..... 1/01/00 or 1/01/01 ....

Go on both days, then you are covered no matter who's right.

Re: Proof to end the debate: July 17th or July 18th?

"Black Sunday" was the 17th. The first members of my family to go to DL were there on the 17th. Public schmublic, I celebrate the 17th.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Re: Proof to end the debate: July 17th or July 18th?

I look at it this way. On what date do you consider the opening of a movie? The date that all the trailers say, or the day two weeks earlier when a sneak preview was given to hollywood insiders?

I've never considered any movie opening on 'sneak preview' days, so I'm not about to fault that logic for a theme park.

If no one in the public was allowed to buy tickets until the 18th, then that's that. Disneyland wasn't built for Walt's 'friends', it was built for the public.

Re: Proof to end the debate: July 17th or July 18th?

I consider it "open" when they premiere it to the world - in the case of a park shown on tv to (what was it, 1 in 4 Americans watching?) the country, it would be the day that the park is shown to the country as being open, dedicated, and having people in it.

Plus, there were all those non-invited gate crashers.

We consider Space Mountain to be open now, don't we?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Even if it is the 18th, we have celebrated 48 times (and on Sunday 49) on the 17th. And that in my opinion counts a lot more.:

Dude, you're hotlinking. Can't see the pic.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...
