Should Disneyland cater to the casual goers or to the hardcore more?

I think the title speaks for itself. Oh, and why

If you are to be successful in most any business, you have to do both - you can't really place one over the other. Disney needs both the hardcore fan like you'd find on these boards, but it also needs the other, I'm guessing, 95 per cent of its fan base - "casual goers" as you call them.

The trick is always to come up things that attract more of the casual visits, without alienating the hardcore fans.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I see the term "casual goer" as nothing short of an insult. The "casual" crowd is seen as never beeing able to understand or appreciate the Disney legacy. I'm sure the vast majority of guests are unaware of how truely authentic the Disneyland Railroad is, and yet that authenticity does not distract from their enjoyment of the Railroad.

The visual splendor and set up of Pirates of the Caribbean does not turn off guests.
The realism of New Orleans Square does not turn off guests.
The authentic mine equipment at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad does not turn off guests.
The horsedrawn carriages on Main Street do not turn off guests.

I have yet to be shown any evidence that guests will be turned off by rich, immersive, thematic environments. All I ever see is people saying that the guests will accept something less and only some people will notice the difference.

How about Disney caters to everybody.

Alienating one part of your consumer base for another is just bad business.

    They are the same thing.

It's the execs, accountaneers, MBAholes and marketers they shouldn't cater to.

The frequent audience the 'hardcores' as you call them, generally attend the park no matter what. While big changes can pull them away, something good always brings them back later. While they would seem like they are the most easy to prevent your future dollars from getting, they are not. I bitch about DCA all the time, yet still go there and have Dinner, and spend my money.

However, your casual audience is much more important. While they spend less over the year, they spend more in the one-shot. If they have a bad time, or something isn't up to the day/short guest standard, there's a good chance they wont come back next trip.

So, as with everything, moderation is the key.

Disneyland has a huge crowd of locals. Much more than WDW. Therefore, they need to be able to draw locals back more frequently than WDW does. Things at Disneyland need to be more dynamic and stay fresh. Many of the things that drive attendance appeal to all groups:

New attractions, shows, fireworks, promotions in the off season, and clever marketing and tie-ins.

I think the one area where Disneyland is lacking is food service. Not enough mid to high quality sit-down restaurants are available in the parks. You have to go to Downtown Disney or the Hotels for that.

Ahhh, if only we had an EPCOT.

DL created the hardcore by doing what they do, which obviously has mass appeal. Why would they try to rethink that?

The hardcore fans will come no matter what.

Disney needs to appeal to the casual and infrequent visitors.

Day in day out 60% of the gate lives within 100 miles.
What is hardcore? To many in Southern California, and I'm not talking about APs, think of Disneyland as 'their' Park. It's an entirely different psychology than WDW.
It's true that they need to appeal to everyone. But they would be foolish to alienate their 'local' audience.

I assume you mean, by "casual goers", people who would like a roller coaster on Tom Sawyer's Island.

    LOL.
I should have been, more specific.

    Sorry if I insulted anyone
Casual - less frequent visitors, but they go occasionally (I'd say, maybe twice a year or so)
Hardcore - people who try to visit the parks at least once every two weeks.
    Great responses so far.

I noticed how everyone said moderation - do you all feel that Disneyland is doing this well enough? Are they catering to the less frequent visitors now as much as they are catering to the more frequent visitors?
