Talking Not so Amazing NY Times mention about Jungle Losing Guns... 9/9/01 (and other things)

Thank you DarkBeer... would never have found this without your wonderful post about DCA.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Pleasing Customers, and Hippos

Don't accuse the Walt Disney Company of not trying to be politically correct at its Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, Calif. Theme park operators have revamped the eight-minute Jungle Cruise ride, one of the park's oldest, so that it no longer includes shots fired at mechanical hippopotamuses. The boat captains -- khaki-wearing tour guides -- used to ''shoot'' at the hippos as they emerged with wiggling ears and open mouths from the river bottom. The changes were made, officials said, in response to comments from patrons.

''It's sad to see the tradition go,'' Mike DeForest, a former skipper on the ride, told The Associated Press last week.

    Others disagreed.

''It's really a form of animal cruelty,'' Debbie Leahy, a spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said of the ride's previous format. ''It's not humorous."

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally I feel PETA should change their name to PETPA after that statement. People for the Ethical Treatment of Plastic Animals. I also found a few other "gems" in that NY collection

Sadly it does not provide dates. Nixon's VP was in 56 for the Monorail dedication, not sure if he visited again later as President or after his resignation. I will continue to look for further information.

"Which presidential press secretary used to work on the Jungle Cruise?
Richard Nixon’s press secretary Ron Ziegler, who, on one visit to Disneyland by then-president Nixon and his entourage, was given permission to take out one of the boats and try to give the spiel himself many years later."

Re: Not so Amazing NY Times mention about Jungle Losing Guns... 9/9/01

Sadly this is an obituary for one of Nixon's men... people are always shocked to find out the answers to "Who was a Jungle Skip?"
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronald L. Ziegler, Press Secretary to President Nixon

Mr. Ziegler was born in Covington, Ky., the son of a production manager for a metal company and a public health nurse. He played fullback at Dixie Heights High School, where his future wife, Nancy Lee Plessinger, was a cheerleader. After attending Xavier University on a football scholarship, he transferred to the University of Southern California, graduating in 1961.

In college, he worked part-time at Disneyland, piloting a boat on the Jungle Cruise 33 times a day. Years later, he would repeat his spiel for reporters: ''Watch out for the crocodiles! They always want to get a head.''
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've heard the story behind it. Evidently when VP Nixon visited the park the Skip at the helm was extremely nervous. Nixon said "Son, don't worry, sit down." then looked at his Press Secretary "Well... get up there..." While I am certain this was more or less staged, having been asked before by a boss to do my skit I can only imagine doing it for the Vice President.

The whole when Nixon visited as VP and asked his Press Secretary to do his spiel is fantastic! I bet the skip on duty was relieved, LOL

Is there a link already with a list of famous ex skippers?

Walt then "Kidnapped" Nixon on the monorail on the same trip.

Anywho - on the PETA subject, didn't they also throw a fit about the cats in POTC being too skinny or something?

No link that I know of to the ex Skips, as to PETA I don't really pay attention unless it is something horrific.

    1) How is shooting a gun at an AA considered animal cruelty?

    2) PETA's not known for having a sense of humor. So how would she know exactly what is, and is not, funny? Besides, was this segment in the ride even meant to be funny? Or was it meant to be an interactive part of the ride?

    This doesn't make sense:
    1. Nixon was VP from 1953-1961.
    2. Ziegler was skipper while in college, graduating in 1961.
I don't think Ziegler was Nixon's press secretary while Nixon was VP. President? sure. Nixon visiting DL as President? I don't think so. That would be well-known in thse parts.

I'm guessing that this visit was after Nixon had resigned and was living nearby in San Clemente.

Good point, Like I said it was a story, not sure exactly when this little visit happened, thought it was funny that part of it was mentioned in the article.

I just felt the need to correct a timeline.
Not unlike my cringing when I hear a current radio ad stating that it was conventional wisdom before 1492 that the world was flat. Poppycosh!, I say.
