Walt Disney was always tearing stuff down and building new stuff in its place. He didn't need to worry about people complaining on the Internet about losing their "favorite" ride or show at Disneyland. He just tore stuff down and built new stuff on the rubble. Disneyland changed more when Walt was alive than it does now.

As for a house of the future, the Disneyland original would seem small and dinky and cramped by todays standards. Americans are much fatter now, and they need massive McMansions in corny neighborhoods with cheesy names like Talega, Ladera Ranch or Vista Del Verde to make them feel affluent and succesful and stylish. You have to keep up with Joneses and their leased Lexus now, and the Monsanto House Of The Future would be an embarassment to the McMansion generation.

Want a trim and fit 1950's modern house in the spirit of the House Of The Future? Want it located 20 minutes from Disneyland? Buy an Eichler House in Orange! Or an Eichler-esque knockoff in Villa Park! http://www.eichlersocal.com
...I want one of those houses. I want one. Really really bad. Small kitchen? 60s appearance? SIGN. ME. UP. (I'm probably the wierdest sixteen-year-old girl you'll ever meet. )

Of course! I just wish I had the chance to experience them.

And while I understand that it was of small size, and it was very fifties looking, the outside had a... uniqueness... Like the 60s version of Tomorrowland. Timeless future-like. Clean cut edges. I wish they had kept it... and just re-done some things.

I totally agree. I think it would still hold appeal today. I wish you could have experienced them too. But, thankfully you live in an era where you can watch things on YouTube, etc. My generation didn't have these things, so, you either saw it or not! ha! I am just glad that now....we can see it again via YouTube, etc.

I only found the video because a while ago I searched for it (I have an obsession with this house, really) and found a 60s vision of a house of the future ("Yes, plexiglass is in our future!" ), so I went looking for that again and to my excitement found this instead.

Funny story, the House of the Future pin was being sold, so I promptly got to Downtown Disney, and asked the nearest Cast member where the House of the Future pins were. Unfortunatley she stared at me like I was dumb. So I just found it on my own. I showed her for future reference, so she could help others. At least she tried, she went looking for me. I just found it first.

I have the pin. I love it to pieces. Although I gotta wonder what's up with that girl?

Now I want the attratcion poster! And the attraction poster for ATIS.

My Dad kinda remembers ATIS. He told me about it. It was really nifty.

Sorry But there was no HOTF attraction poster made for this.
This blog has some rare pics of the HOTF, But you have to dig for them. I think there are some in the march 2007 archive.

I always wanted the house for myself. Today, it would be a very retro fun place to live.

There isn't a poster? That stinks! Oh well. I'll live, I guess.

I always wanted to live in it too. Especially in Disneyland. (Kidding, kidding!)

You make very valid points about the larger size of people, class conciousness and the desire to live in larger than 1950's sized homes. That desire for a larger living space has also translated into higher energy usage and greenhouse gas production.

While as you point out, the gadgets in the HOTF did become dated and the rooms cramped by today's standards, thats no reason not to build a larger scale version of the HOTF with futuristic and green technology. Heck, you could even add a second story!

The OP isn't alone in that I'd love to live in (a larger version) of the HOTF right now! Even with today's technology... (not to mention the CA government is still offering those nice rebates on photovoltaic solar installations) and interior design, it would be a slick house to live in.

    Sign me up baby!!!

    YAY! I'm not alone! -dance-

I know. I'd love to live in a 50s house, even with the dated technology. I want a fridge like hers! I want everything to be plastic! I want it! Or, at least, to be able to go into it. I'd love it. I'd squeel.

I want one of those 60s houses that the link was provided to. How much do you think they're going for?

Oooh. Thanks for posting the ATIS things! I'm so very happy. Thank you!
