    House of the Future

I found this video on youtube about the House of the Future that used to be in tomorrowland, and it got me thinking... Why did they tear it down?

I mean, it still seemed rather futuristic from photos I've seen. It would be nice if it was still there. Is there anyone else who would like to see this attraction be here still? Even if you never went in it?

I'm only sixteen years of age, and this (and ATIS) is the only attraction I would gladly travel in time to see (With the fear of destroying the space-time continuum, of course).

So my main question is, why did they tear it down? Didn't they make it so you couldn't get into it for a while, and then closed it down?

(Also, this is my first thread that I've made (I think?) be nice! )

((And sorry if this has been asked before!))

Mandora, I believed cut funding to the house. Also if my knowledge is correct alot of things in there were no longer being considered futuristic. But if you walk near by King Tritons Garden you can find a big Piece of green concrete, that is a big piece of the foundation from the house of the future...I love the demolition story of the house

Mandora? Do you mean Mansanto? Or are we talking of two seperate things?

And that simply sucks. I'd love to walk through it.

The demolition story made me laugh, though. That's a plus.

Excellent video find! What a rare film; I'll definitely be saving that one.

Here's some good articles about the Monsanto House of the Future. Funding wasn't an issue; the reason it was demolished was both due to the construction of Tomorrowland 1967 and the feeling that the HOF was a bit dated.

Great video find! I love stuff on the Plastics Home of the Future.

Here's a picture of it being crunched up:

Maybe the wrecking balls bounced off, but this thing didn't.

    Re: House of the Future

I walked through the house of the future several times. Even though the specific gizmos in the house became dated (electric shavers, microwave ovens etc) I felt the overall lines and appearance of the house were classic, timeless if you will.

The size of houses has grown quite a bit over the years. The typical 3 bedroom 2 bath home being built in Anaheim in 1960 was around 1,100 to 1,300 square feet. The house of the future reflected that compact size. Of course there wouldn't be room for a 4,000 square foot home of the future in Tomorrowland.

Even so, I think an updated version of the house, using advanced green technology, could be constructed, looking very much like the original house of the future with some changes:

+ A roof covered in photovoltaic cells, with fuel cells for energy storage

+ Energy efficient appliances (more so than todays)

+ Home intelligence center to control the generation of power, waste recycling, the environment of the house, run the active security system and monitor the need for home and appliance maintenance.

+ A speech interface to converse with the home occupants as well as machine vision to keep an eye on the home inside and out.

+ An integrated home entertainment/information system with displays built into the walls.

+ Windows that either can auto-tint or that can be set for privacy.

+ The house would be strong, able to resist hurricane winds and flying debris.

+ The house should be able to talk to the computer in your car to see if any problems are on the horizon and inform you the situation.

+ All with that classic Disney appearance.

That's an attraction I'd go see. The features of the house obvious would not have to actually work, just have the appearance of working.

Yeah, I was fortunate enough to have experienced the house first hand. Have a few pics of me in it around here as well.

But sadly, it quickly went from being the house of the future, to the house of the past.

    Re: House of the Future

It was there for 10 years, and it had grown dated and too "50's" looking to people of the mid 1960's. It needed to go. Besides, there were bigger and better and shinier sponsored things moving in to replace it; GE's Carousel of Progress, Monsanto's Adventure Thru Inner Space, Bell System's CircleVision, McDonnel-Douglas's Flight To The Moon, Goodyear's PeopleMover, etc.

Walt Disney was always tearing stuff down and building new stuff in its place. He didn't need to worry about people complaining on the Internet about losing their "favorite" ride or show at Disneyland. He just tore stuff down and built new stuff on the rubble. Disneyland changed more when Walt was alive than it does now.

As for a house of the future, the Disneyland original would seem small and dinky and cramped by todays standards. Americans are much fatter now, and they need massive McMansions in corny neighborhoods with cheesy names like Talega, Ladera Ranch or Vista Del Verde to make them feel affluent and succesful and stylish. You have to keep up with Joneses and their leased Lexus now, and the Monsanto House Of The Future would be an embarassment to the McMansion generation.

Want a trim and fit 1950's modern house in the spirit of the House Of The Future? Want it located 20 minutes from Disneyland? Buy an Eichler House in Orange! Or an Eichler-esque knockoff in Villa Park! http://www.eichlersocal.com
