What makes Jungle, Jungle?

I was thinking about the "loosely based" movie, and it really made me think even harder about the J.C. Specifically, what makes Jungle, Jungle. What makes it the icon that is has become? I'm not looking for a summary, I'm looking for possibly a favorite joke, great memory, special scene or unforgettable moment. This could be anytime from opening to present. While I could include all the J.C.'s I think Disneyland is by far the dearest to many people. So... what makes it what it is, and what is that one thing that you hope makes it in the movie?

For me it is the shots. that is my first memory of Jungle, hearing those shots. I remember them so clearly, I was only 4. When I finally became a Skip that was one of the greatest of traditions. More then anything else I would enjoy a scene with an inside joke for the Skips. Imagine a Skipper firing 2 shots to scare away a hippo, just then the boat engine dies and you hear other Skips fire 3 more shots, then a hippo charges the boat and sends it drifting, 6 more shots, then the classic line "Your ALLLLL clear!"

Re: What makes Jungle, Jungle?

My funny thought was standing in line at City Hall and hearing a guest complain about something meaningless.

No guest for awhile.

Bang Bang,

I hope they didn't miss.

Oh darn, there's the stupid guest.

Ummm...I truly still get a kick out of "the back side of water." Don't ask me why. But, I have been hearing that since I was 4 years old (I am almost 38) and I still giggle. Now I get a kick out of the skipper doing the spear sound effects for some odd reason.

Years ago I heard a corny joke (I was about 8 or 9) when we got back to the dock that I have never forgotten: "What did Snow White say when she got to the Fotomat (sp?)?" "Some day my prints will come." Ugh...I know...but as a kid I thought that was really funny.

Re: What makes Jungle, Jungle?

For me, it's the sense that there really is a limitless jungle out there with countless twists and turns in the river, even though I know the whole thing's layout and size. Sunlight prickling through the dense foliage, or else a relaxing darkness that feels great after a meal or when you're tired. The well-integrated theming of Indiana Jones. The boat sounds. (That's a big one--it needs to be nailed in the movie.)

On the topic of JC, I have a confession to make. I...sigh...have never gotten the whole "backside of water" joke. Anyone want to explain it to me? Or...is it really as simple as it seems? I do tend to overthink jokes sometimes...

It's just as it seems. Your BEHIND the water, so it's the backside of water. (I think? )

My favorite memory is when my skip had the whole boat lean over so we wouldn't get spears chucked in us, and the skip was all, "..Guys! Your supposed to THROW the spears! -sigh- Just get back down and wait for the next boat." And they reset back down.

And another time our skipper was all, "They usually attack from the right. -faces right, back to where they pop up-" I thought he was gonna turn around and say a joke, but no, he just faced the right and then was all, "I guess they aren't coming out today." Or something to that effect. It was so funny. His face was priceless. He was just like, "ho-hum. " It was great.

That's the only experiences I don't think I've posted before (and I recently remembered).

I think that what makes jungle Jungle is... Well, the jokes, the skips, and the atmosphere.

What movie are you talking about?

Re: What makes Jungle, Jungle?

"Backside of Water" was much better when Mikey did "Front side of Rock". We tried to get it in the official spiel but management said "You can't make fun of an existing joke". I used that mentality and asked about "side of water" which was approved. They couldn't explain it and went for the "because I said no" excuse ...too bad I loved that spin off!

They keep talking about a Jungle Cruise movie, I just wish it was directed by Mel Brooks! I was thinking "Jungle Cruise; The Movie; The Musical" I know he would have fun with this!

I got one of those a few weeks ago. Pretty funny to watch the animatronics reset "on command."

Re: What makes Jungle, Jungle?

The best part of it is getting to go on a real cruise in a real jungle!

Re: What makes Jungle, Jungle?

What makes Jungle for me is sitting in City Hall hearing the 'POP! POP!' every 5 minutes.

We always talked about the day that sound would return.

"Hopefully one day we can stand on Main Street and hear, bang bang...and the clouds will part and the angels will sing"
-Gerry York

After I left the park (or was shown the door, depending on which version you want to believe), I walked out to Main Street and suddenly hear a famililar sound...pop, pop.

And you know what?

At that moment the clouds parted...and I'm pretty sure the Angels sang.

I can't claim it because many have done it. However I do remember having a little kid hand me his sword because the breaker for the lights went out and I was too lazy to reset it!

I always enjoyed the story involving the first time we got those back. Evidently several individuals in City Hall's phone room were not aware of that and ducked under their desks!

Re: What makes Jungle, Jungle?

The one cool thing about the JC is the feeling that you really are in the jungle. The trees, the water, the sounds. You really feel like you are there. But then the skipper stats to talk and there goes your trip.
