Submarine Voyage a la West Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada may very well be the tackiest place on Earth. The mall's creators make no apologies for stealing and copying elements from Disneyland and for assembling those elements in an imbecilic way. But, the creators did improve on Disneyland's Submarine Voyage in some ways with the Deep Sea Adventure, so I wonder whether or not Imagineering will trump West Edmonton Mall with a clearly superior attraction that incorporates some of the improvements the mall made to the idea.

I especially like the whimsical series of bridges that traverse the paths of the watercraft and that allow visitors to observe the submarines from above.

The fountain looks as if something similar might have been much more appropriate for Tomorrowland than anything like Cosmic Waves. The shape reminds me of the spaceship in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

Does the Mall still even have those Subs? I heard a rumor that they closed and were replaced by a seal and sea otter show

I had also heard a rumor that those subs were for sale and closed.

Anyway, the sub ride at the mall differed in that they were REAL submarines and submerged beneath the water. Also, the ride was a tour through realy fish and sealife, not the animatronic variety.

Another big difference, is that the subs at the mall (being a pay per ride attraction and not at a huge theme park) had a very limited capacity.

The fish in the mall were actually in acryllic tubes that were under the water. Not in the actual water the subs went through. I posted a video of it a while back, I can't remember if it was on this board or not, I'll go see if I still have it anywhere.

ok, I found the video. It is on my own webspace but unfortunately the quality isn't very good. You'll get the idea though. This was made quite a while ago so i don't know wheather or not the ride is still in operation.

The subs just closed last month. Although the papers were saying it was closed forever. Their is talk that they will come back in a different way.

I live right next to the mall. I really is the tackiest place on Earth and it really needs a refurb... needs it like I need water. However it's still darn cool. The mall offers a fantasic blend of entertainment and shopping and it's a style that is being copied all over the world.
