I doubt it's quite that sinister. I don't see them making it out to be Walt's park. The entrance plaza is a tribute to Walt in a sense, recreating the feeling of the 1920s Los Angeles that Walt came to so long ago.

I think you are looking way too much into it.

Bob Thomas paints Walt Disney as a God. Others paint him as a villian. Triumph of the American Imagination paints him as neither, but a troubled visionary. It doesn't shy away from low points. I hope the new Walt Disney story presentation isn't as sappy as past offerings and offers a more honest look at the man, not the legend.

They're trying to latch onto the great positive feelings about Walt Disney, and make DCA "Walt's park". They want Walt Disney's name and history plastered all over the park, (as well as Walt's creation, Mickey), so that if there is any future criticism by the fan base (and there will be), it will seem like you're criticizing Walt himself.

The only problem is, it's not Walt's park.

Don't be fooled.
I'm sorry, but this really is a huge stretch. Equating trying to go for emotional attachment by focusing on what traditionally has worked for Disney--Walt and his creations--with a sinister attempt to dodge responsibility for their work and retroactively attribute the park to Walt himself is a leap over a logical chasm.

I agree. Why don't we give the entire thing a chance?

Yes, but Walt built Disneyland because those "amusement places" disgusted him. Perhaps a more apt tribute would be to leave Paradise Pier as is...

Because, like DCA itself, if it disappoints after they've spent the money, it'll be too late. Right now they have the power to improve their plans.

People, there are some facts you keep missing. I'll spell it out for you:

1) This is Phase One. All of the announced work is Phase One of California Adventure. Phase One implies at least a Phase Two is coming. They're making changes, and then they'll make more until it's right, but I don't think ANYONE expects this series of changes will fix DCA, just start the process

2) California is no longer the unifying theme of this park, Walt Disney is. That's a wide subject. The Hollywood section is a tribute to the California Walt came to, just as Main Street is a tribute to the Marceline of Walt's childhood. It is not a retread of the same idea, it's two related ideas designed to ease you in to another world. It's a great idea.

3) The Golden State Area is like Frontierland or Adventureland, it's a section of park that is landscaped like wild California, just as Frontierland is set up like the wild west. All they need is some neat theming and a few more attractions and it will be excellent (I think this will be part of phase two).

4) Little Mermaid will be next to jumping jellyfish, Ariel's Grotto, and Triton's Carousel (Al said there'd be a lot of movement of Paradise Pier stuff. It will work as a self-contained area within the park (remember, the theme is Walt Disney, not California, it's okay to have this kind of land, just like Bug's land).

5) Carsland will be awesome, the rides sound good and the theming is actually there. This will be the biggest draw to DCA, trust me on this. This will be the most "otherworldly" area in the land.

6) Paradise Pier's rides and games are gaining character themes. Maliboomer is going because it offers nothing that can be flavored as Disney, and I bet the Stinger's going too. I also bet this is the area you have the best chance of finding characters in the entire park, in short, it's a more immersive experience combining entertainment of Walt's Era to the characters he created. So, Mickey Wheel makes perfect sense in this context.

7) World of Color may rival Fantasmic, so the days of mass exodus could end. Good, let's try to have this park hold it's own with DL.

In short, this overhaul, combined with upcoming phases of construction and expansion, will be the process that makes DCA into a partner with the park across the way. This is good, and going to get much better. They're trying to add Walt to this park, and that's what it needed the whole time it existed. It will never have all the history of Disneyland, but it will look and feel like a Disney park.
Well said!

Great idea. None of us have even seen the completed product so why are we complaining about mis matched themeing. We don't even know if its going to still be called California Adventure anymore.

I think that we do need to pay tribute to Walt Disney in a sense...after all, if it weren't for him, there wouldn't be a DCA to mess with anyhow.

Besides, DCA's open entrance plan sucks. Maybe it works for other Disney parks, but come on. Who could easily tell that the entrance is themed like a postcard? I think that we should take what we can get...nearly anything is better than what we have so far.

But the theme IS California, just through Walt's eyes. Walt Disney's California Adventure. If the theme is just Disney, then all the attractions at DL are acceptable at DCA. I'm sorry, but I don't think The Jungle Cruise belongs in DCA, even if it is an original creation of Disney AND in Disneyland California.

I'm all for a Little Mermaid attraction, just put it where it makes sense, Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, DisneySeas, any of the Disney Studios parks, or even in the Studio section of DCA. But having the story of the Little Mermaid tied to the Pacific coastline of 1930's California is absurd.
