I guess there are a few things I'm not so keen on, one being the beer garden, and the other being that they are taking the Mickey head off Screamin' and putting it on the sun wheel. Why are they putting in a beer garden? The winery made sense since that is what California is known for, but are they known for beer? I guess I don't really see the point in having that. Just my opinion.
And I thought the point of the mickey head on Screamin was to give an ordinary roller coaster a Disney touch. If they take that away, what gives it the Disney touch? I know it plays music, but it was neat seeing the mickey head and knowing that was the loop. *ok, not the actual loop, but you know what I mean*

I am excited to see the rest of the changes. Not sure if Mickey's Philarmagic would fit in DCA, but I think it is something that should come to the Disneyland resort. TSMM seems to be bringing more people to DCA, and there is always a line for it. So who knows. I guess only time will tell.
I'm pretty sure it's not the same Mickey head on Screamin' thats going on Sun Wheel. They are replacing the Mickey Mouse head on Screamin' with a Paradise Pier logo which I think will look pretty good.

In regard to the burger place, I’m pretty sure that the intention is to keep the structure and kitchen in tact and reuse it for the beer garden as discussed before. If you look at the maps that the newspapers put out about the DCA project, you can see that it appears the structures of the restaurants are basically to remain and all be integrated into the beer garden, so I would guess the facades will just be rethemed to fit the new PP aesthetics. I think Baloo had said that they may reduce the size of the Pizza O’ Mow Mow building to make more room in that back corner for a future attraction, but I think that’s still being decided.

In regard to the Beer Garden, I think it is appropriate to the theme. First, Beer Gardens are not all about beer. They are really just an outdoor dining/ park-like setting where you can of course get beer, but it’s not all about beer, it’s about the community socialization and the food just as much. To really understand the Beer Garden, why it belongs, and what it might be like, you have to look at the history. Many German immigrants came to the US around the 1880’s and they brought with them their tradition of Beer Gardens, (Many communities of Europe have similar large outdoor festivals, frequently during the summer.) Over the late 19th century, Beer Gardens became really popular and the concept spread across the country, with each region developing their own unique version of this German tradition. By the early 20th century, (the new setting of PP,) the concept was pretty widely spread, and in California, beachside Beer Gardens were all the rage and it was very common for them to be integrated into boardwalks of the day. This historic, west coast influences Beer Garden is what I would expect to see.

In regard to Screamin’ I think they’ve decided, and IMO rightly so, that it would be more Disneyish if they made the coaster feel more like an era appropriate coaster, and add the era appropriate graphics rather than just slapping a Mickey on it. The new star is going to have really cool lighting effects when the trains go by that should put the old Mickey to shame, and the purpose of the new Mickey on the wheel is partially for him to be integrated into the WoC show. I’m hoping they can make him talk using a giant version of the HM singing bust effect or something similar.

Anyway, while people think that many of these additions don’t seem to fit the theme, in fact virtually everything they’re doing somehow actually does support the historic California theming that the park is being transformed into or even more importantly the land in which it will be in once the layout of the park is transformed.

Hmm... I see that too. I wonder if that's true. I guess we'll just have to wait & see tomorrow!

Sorry, I'm not used to checking the first post in each thread whenever I check the boards.. And besides, it still says the Sun Wheel work starts tomorrow, Sept 11.

If i understood correctly the main circle of the Mickey icon on screamin will remain and just rethemed. the ear portions will be removed and then a large Paradise Pier logo placed above the circle.

The Mickey on the sunwheel will be diferent and will include projections and lighting.

as for the beer garden, its not so much about it being a CAlifornia thing its more about being apropriate to the Pier theme and era they are trying to develop.

Not everything built has to be connected to the California theme as long as it is connected to the land it is being built for which is then themed to the parks overall theme.

as for the construction dates. Eventhough preliminary dates dates for some of the changes have been agreed on do not be surprise to see some of them moved to accommodate other conflicting schedules and work. The finish target year is early 2012 for phase one and that is the main date being focused on.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I guess that makes sense, about the beer garden. And I know it's not all about beer, but I'm just afraid that is what some people are going to turn it into. Not like one beer with a meal, but maybe try to get more. And I know some people can hold their beer just fine, but I'm more worried about those who think they can when they really can't.

I'm still not keen on the mickey head on the sun wheel. From the drawing, I just don't like it. Not sure why, but there is just something that looks funny about it. Not that I prefer the giant sun, but something about the Mickey looks just wrong.

I first had concerns when they announced DCA would be serving alcohol in the first place. Judging from the threads that were created during the time of DCA's construction, I don't think I was alone in that. Up until that point, west-coasters weren't used to having booze in their Disney parks. Universal, sure, but not Disney (I'm not counting Club 33 in this, seeing as how few people have ever been). Seeing as how we haven't seen any threads about some drunken idiot spoiling a child's time at DCA, or people being arrested for causing bar fights on the local news, I think it's okay . The responsibility ultimately falls on the restaurant serving the alcohol to make sure to cut off an individual at the appropriate time, if they refuse to make the judgement call themself.

I guess that is ok, but I haven't been to EPCOT in a while. And it seems like the drinking is inside a restaurant or at least you don't see people drinking. Or maybe I'm just not looking for them. But we also don't ever spend that much time in EPCOT when we are there. So I guess I really can't speak on that. But drinking there seems to fit in more with Germany and such, but I just can't wrap my mind around a Beer Garden in DCA.

I agree with that. I think it's more the shock of drinking in a Disney park. *I also don't consider Club 33, because that is almost seperate from the park in that you have to have a membership there to get in and it's not open to everyone....you get the idea* I always liked that there wasn't alcohol in Disneyland or DCA. I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens.

Wait, I thought there was alcohol in DCA. I've only been to DCA twice, and both times was in the Hollywood area.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I don't see the Beer Garden as changing things up that much. There's already a bar at Ariel's Grotto and the Hearthstone Lounge at the Grand Californian (not to mention Napa Rose). People already have many options to booze it up (they serve beer at Taste Pilots too). I don't see the Beer Garden as changing things for the worse. As long as it has plenty of food options, it will be popular with everyone.

I think the amount of people who would actually go to DCA to get drunk is extremely slim.

Exactly. They have D-Town Disney and one's hotel room for that.

We never have gone to DCA to "get drunk" but we certainly have gone with the main focus on drinking before. Really, I can't think of a much better spot in either park then wine tasting on the patio overlooking the Electrical Parade at night.

Exactly! It's too expensive and choices are limited. The key is to get drunk BEFORE going to DCA.
