Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

The Hyperion is not on the way out. As a matter of fact the hyperion is such a vital part of the resort that Burbank and TDA feel that Disneyland also needs a state of the art theater of its own. The fantasyland theater is being considered for removal to build a new theater for that park.

RNRC is not even on the agenda for DCA.

Thanks so much for the information. That's good to hear! I love seeing the Hyperion and all of the high quality shows that the resort is capable of producing. So, it would be great news for the Fantasyland theater to get the same treatment. I would like to see RnRC, but that's for another time then.

Hooray! Such a disappointment of a ride. Cheap Eisner / Pressler era thinking for sure. Buy a cloned ride, put it in a building, add music and it's Disney Quality? I don't think so. DCA does NOT need anymore attractions built on the Pressler model.

I don't understand what you're saying since Disney always outsourced their coasters for outside manufacturing while WDI designs them in-house.

WDI designed this track for the most part to their liking while it is strongly believed Vekoma manufactured the product to Disney's designs. Vekoma doesn't acknowledge they had anything to do with this attraction most likely due to Disney's tight grip over their product. The Rock N Rollercoaster layout was the first of that layout in 1999 before it was cloned by Vekoma for Walibi World in 2000, which they were allowed to do without license fees, as long as they didn't share the theme or premise. Not to mention the track layout, though virtually identical, are not exactly the same.

I may not have liked how Eisner ran things toward the end of his career, but this just seems like we're grabbing straws.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I can't even explain how happy I am they are adding the Walt Disney Story at DCA and making it the front and landmark building. I was so upset after seeing it in WDW - it was a wonderful, wonderful attraction and it was hidden in a back, dark corner by som bathrooms. It honestly made me sick - Walt's story needs to be the forefront attraction in every Disney park.

I'm really excited for the DCA expansion! Thanks for keeping us updated on it!

It used to be tucked away in DCA as well when it was inside Disney Animation, where Turtle Talk is now. And I believe this new Walt Disney Story will in fact be a new and bigger version of the concept.

Really? Guess that shows how much attention I must have paid to DCA when it first opened.... And bigger and better than WDW? That will be nice - while WDW's was aboslutely wonderful, I still feel like there could definietly be that extra push. Thanks for letting me know.

I would have no problerm with bring in a Rock N Roller-Coaster *IF* they don;t just make it an exact carbon-copy clone, and they put a little effort into it.

The signage is an obvious thing to change, but they can come up with a different soundtrack from somneone other than Aerosmith, different theming elements, perhaps tinker with the ride layout and intensity.

Let's see, any bands that have been together and playing continuously for decades, and have the kind of hot material they could use.... Hey, I've got one! And they are definitely California born and bred - San Francisco "East Bay Funk" but they'd do nicely...

Rock N Roller Coaster at Disney's California Adventure - Starring 'Tower of Power'.

You heard it here first. They've got dozens of high-energy songs they could use - There's this one hard-driving instrumental with the Horn Section front and center that's even named right - "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" time 5:26 "Monster On A Leash" album.

Someone get me Bob Iger on the line, have I got a pitch for him...

Well to be fair the park did not open with the Walt disney story in the animation attraction. DCA opened with another film based movie in the theater inside the animation attraction. The movie if i recall was about the process of animation.

The film was then updated later and the Walt Disney story was added for a while as a tribute. Then it was removed to add turtle talk.

I am sure someone else can share dates and more information on the transformation of that corner of the aniamtion attraction. The theater was once much bigger but then made more intimate for Turtle talk. The screen was reduced in size, rows of seats removed and some minor theming added for the new attraction.

Well, you learn something new every day! My lack of knowledge on the animation building's offerings come from the fact that I have parents who are the we MUST ride EVERY ride type, and it sounds like I've missed out on some smaller things! Now that I'm planning trips of my own, I'll be able to change that.

Was the old attraction just a film, or did it include memorablia from Walt's life like the WDW one does? I'm wondering what they will be putting in the new one that's planned.

I don't remember anything other than the film. You walked into the theater, watched, then walked out. I could be wrong as I only saw it once and it was a while ago.

The new Walt Disney Story will be very elaborate and immersive. Think of it like a version 2. There will be a pre-show which will then enter you into the auditorium. That's where what I know comes to an end. I believe there is a nice press release somewhere and hopefully someone can post it here. There is also some concept art floating around.

The new film will also heavily focus on Walt's journey to California and have plenty of Californian elements and ties made into the presentation. This is one of the factors that wanted to be touched on and made evident in the presentation.

I'll go have to go looking for that concept art. It would be interesting to see! I think the California elements are great idea, as well - it'll make it differ from WDW's and, of course, be more fitting as DL is the 'mother park'.

Thanks for your info - it's gotten me even more excited for this park revamp. Hopefully someone does have the press release - I'd love to see it!

Links to the press release and various concept art is available on the first page of this thread.

Here is the concept art for the entrance lobby of The Walt Disney Story

It was just the film. For awhile they did have an old multiplane camera that was used for animation. Since the attraction used to feature a movie about animation ( I think it had Robin williams in it) the small waiting lobby for the attraction had a timeline of animated Disney movies as well as the camera.

Then later the movie changed to the Walt Disney story and the waiting area pretty much stayed the same.

When that closed and the theater was being retroffited, they removed the camera and movie timeline and added a Princess meet and greet until Turtle Talk opened.

That is when they moved the character meet and greet to the opposite end of the animation attraction and set it up in the middle of the small display studio.

The Disney story attraction in MGM was set-up much better due to the fact that the company decided to celebrate Disney's 100th birthday over at WDW. They even borrowed Walt Disney's original office from the Lincoln attraction here in Disneyland and still has not been returned.

Hopefully WDI will remind a few people that its time for the desk and all of the tiems in the office to be returned back to its original place. Then it could again be displayed in Anaheim in this new attraction dedicated to Walt Disney
