Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

Hollywood land, seriously that seems un-necessary the Hollywood picture backlot name seems all encompassing enough to me.

Unless the idea is to change it for the sake of removing all things that could be considered negative from DCA's opening.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I think the idea of turning it into an actual representation of Hollywood instead of a fake movie studio makes a whole lot of sense.

Agreed. A romanticized version of Hollywood with the Carthay Circle Theater adjacent to it, the red car going down the street, nice comfortable eateries and shops... I think Hollywood Pictures Backlot just sounds like the dead way to go. On a sound stage, the magic happens IN the buildings rather than the outside. I think for a full land made to entertain guests even when they're not on a ride, going the route of 1920-30s Hollywood is the smarter and more fun way to go.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I agree, the historic feel for Hollywood is the way to go, but Hollywood Land? I hope that's just a working title because that's a terrible name. Any descriptive adjative would be better like:

Classic Hollywood
Vintage Hollywood
Golden Hollywood
Magical Hollywood

Hollywood Movieland, or Hollywood Pictureland, any would be better IMO. I do think the backlot needs to go though.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I think the Hollywood Land name does fit somewhat because it pays homage to the original Hollywood sign back when it was a real estate development.

Did the sign still say "Hollywoodland" when Walt arrived? 'Cause that would be nifty!

Right. Hollywoodland sign went up in the mid 20s. Around 1924 I think. The first mickey mouse cartoon was what... 1928?

The Hollywoodland sign was in really bad shape by the 40s and in 1949 was being torn down. The public let out an outcry as they have come to love the sign. The sign was refurbished and shortened to just Hollywood.

I agree in a sense, but I think that at least with the new architecture and better theming to the "fair" rides, PP will become a lot nicer. Many aspects of those old victorian parks were really beautiful, especially at night.

I know many people hate the idea an exposed coaster in a Disney park, but personally, I've always loved the look of classic roller coasters and think the whole area is going to look really great, especially when it hosts the world of color. Like I said before, it will feel more like Fantasyland. People rarely complain about the themed carnival rides there, because they have some decent theming and are surrounded by beautiful architecture.

Anyway, my original point was merely that since it is going to basically still have a boardwalk feel, it would make more sense to fully develop the new theme and add a few rides dark rides as well to the area so that it is more kid friendly and keeps the "fair" feel limited to the land of the park where that theme belongs. The Bug Fair on the other hand was just a quick fix that was thrown in hastily and once the whole park offers more for kids to do, I think it should go.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

Nobody ever said called the city Hollywoodland, it was the name of the real estate development that put up the sign.

No, but it says a lot about the time period that DCA's hollywood SHOULD represent. The execs at WDI have acknowledged that guests don't want to do things that are "modern" per se. They do read the surveys, they do read the websites and understand now that we really want to go to another world that isn't represented by "today". A backlot, is all about the now.

Turning it into Hollywood Land is a more accurate way of describing the land that Hollywood represents. Whether it be movies, music, stage or screen. There's no sense of fantasy on a backlot. But in Hollywood Land, anything can be a reality.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

Cohete I agree, I said I want the backlot aspect removed, I just personally don't care for Hollywoodland name, I guess it sounds like I'm outvoted here though. I agree that the concept for the land is the right direction for the park, so I guess I'm ok with whatever they decide to name it. If people think it conveys the right image to most guests, that's the most important thing.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

i've got another question, since we're talking about the Hollywood Pictures Backlot and Walt Disney Plaza areas. I know there will be red cable cars, so does this actually mean there will be an eletrical cable running along the street from the entrance, past Carthay, and all the way to TOT?

My guess is that they'll be jolly trolley style to avoid all the cables. But I could be wrong.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

I'm kind of on the fence about whether i would or wouldn't like cables. I mean yah they could make it seem dirty and cluttered, but then again it would be more realistic. I'm only asking because I thinking of some ideas for DCA and one of them invovled changing the parade route.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker

Coheteboy makes a good point about the name HOLLYWOODLAND.

I've thought this was the best name for that area since DCA debuted.
