I rode it, and rode in the Caboose for the first time Friday night Geek moment!! The Kimball was awesome. It seems a little more powerful then the others, but that might just be me. All except once (we had CK Holiday) we just happened to have the Ward Kimball as our train.

It was awesome. We sat upfront, however it broke down right after we got off. Coincidence? I think not....

We've been on it a few times now. It seems to be more powerful than what the conductors are used to. Each time it's started, it's been a little jerkier than the other engines, once in motion it does get going pretty fast.

    Love it!
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

I don't mean to be rude but I have got to ask this after seeing a lot of threads on this Ward Kimball engine.

What is the big deal about it? Isn't it just another train? I don't understand what's so amazing about it.

    Re: We Rode Ward Kimball!

For 90% of the people at Disneyland, the Ward Kimball is no big deal. For probably 80% of the people who take the time to ride the Disneyland RailRoad, it's no big deal.

For me it's just all history, geeky nostalgia, and a boyhood love of most anything on rails all wrapped up in one bright red wood and hot steel and iron locomotive called the Ward Kimball.

Disneyland has been called "The World's Largest Train Set" for a reason. Walt loved trains, and it wasn't long after he owned a small ride-on train that he started dreaming about bigger trains, and where he could run it... and it was Ward Kimball who introduced him to trains. So in some small way (other than Ward Kimball's involvement in Walt's professional life) Ward Kimball is responsible for Disneyland being created.

I grew up about a half mile from a world famous trolley museum in New England, and spent MANY boyhood hours exploring the cars from around the world and riding the rails out into the woods and back. My parent's idea of vacation was usually a week long tour of any places that offered tours or historical 'living' museums... and this usually included at least one railroad train museum per year (along with some memorably boring tours of steel mills and granite quarries).

So a newly restored train named after Ward Kimball holds especially strong nostalgia and sweet feelings for me. I just wasn't happy with my Disneyland visits this past month until I finally got to see, ride, and take pictures of the Ward Kimball last week.

and I have little doubt I'll be taking more pictures of the train and train ride experience at Disneyland in the coming months.

All of the engines have their names painted on the cab.

    Re: We Rode Ward Kimball!

July 16th was my first day visiting Disneyland Park. My plan was to enter the park and before walking down Main Street, I would take a ride on the train, just as "Walt" did 50 years ago on July 17, 1955.

We arrived at the park about 2:30 p.m. We had to wait for two trains, before a third one arrived for us. It was the Ward Kimball. I had been taking pictures, so I was able to get one of the name on the side, and also of the Jiminy Cricket silouhetted on the front.

I am an avid Jiminy Cricket fan. After reading about Ward Kimball being the artist who drew Jiminy, I was hoping for the chnce to ride that train. The ride meant something special to me because of the "Cricket Conection". I will always remember that first train ride.

My "Cricket Connection" then got better. When we entered "Town Square", the Pinnochio float was stopped and Jiminy Cricket was performing.

I will remember those moments forever.
